Jason Mohammad pulls out of BBC show Final Score as stars stage walkout in support of Gary Lineker
UPDATED:
BBC in chaos after Gary Lineker’s Match of the Day axe triggers mass walk-out
The BBC has been plunged into turmoil after its decision to stand down Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker triggered a mass walk-out of pundits and commentators from its flagship Premier League highlights show.
The UK broadcaster confirmed on Friday afternoon that Lineker, 62, will not present the programme until it reaches an agreement with him over his social media use, a row triggered by a recent tweet in which the former England international criticised the UK government’s immigration policy.
But that move sparked an extraordinary backlash, including:
Studio pundits including Alan Shearer, Ian Wright, Alex Scott and Jermaine Jenas insisting they would not take part in the show as a sign of solidarity with Lineker
Match commentators also withdrawing their services from the programme
The BBC issuing a statement saying that the programme would run as scheduled but without studio presentation or punditry
The day’s dramatic events have also left the BBC facing the embarrassing possibility of managers and players refusing to speak to them as a show of support for Lineker.
The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) are in talks with players about the news to help find a collective position. They will also support any players who could potentially be fined if they chose not to speak with Match of the Day as part of their broadcast commitments.
Lineker, who first presented Match of the Day in 1999, criticised the UK government’s new asylum policy in a tweet on March 7.
He wrote on Twitter: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries. This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”

Ian Wright now will not be appearing on the BBC
Fri Mar 10, 2023 6:16 pm
Absolute joke that this has had to happen.
I'm no great fan of Lineker but as Piers Morgan, who I'm also not a big fan, said - Lineker is a sports presenter and that's it. He's not a newsreader, political journalist or have any impact on the BBC's reporting of political matters. If this was Huw Edwards or Chris Mason, it would be a completely different matter.
He's also a freelancer who tweeted his thoughts on his personal Twitter account. He may earn a lot of money through BBC but the truth is he could earn more than that by working for Sky Sports or Amazon if he wanted.
Interesting that the BBC took no action against Alan Sugar tweeting racist things or for his political opinion.
Like I say, not a fan of Lineker, but I think he's been treated badly by his employers here after 24 years of service. Won't blame him if he decides to leave and make more money elsewhere now.
Well done to Ian Wright as well for stepping back from MOTD tomorrow in solidarity.

Come on Danny Murphy it’s your turn, you know it makes sense
Fri Mar 10, 2023 7:10 pm
Great news, not because of his tweet, just him Shearer and Wright are so yesteryear.
I series link MOTD as I have grown up with it, but skip all the mindless chat in between the games. Their salaries are just what is so wrong with the BBC. £425K for Shearer is obsene

Lineker has already housed some asylum seekers.

Isn't it ironic, as soon as someone like lineker says something wrong the woke jump to his defense screaming freedom of speech. But if it was someone else that said something that lineker and the woke disagreed with they would be calling for there heads, Clarkson is a recent example.

Exactly!. The far left have got their contradictions down to a fine art
Fri Mar 10, 2023 8:30 pm
It’s clear it was his own personal opinion, and not that of the BBC. It has no relevance whatsoever to his ability as a sports presenter. The BBC have misread the room on this occasion.
Jill Scott has now refused to take over for Lineker on MOTD.

What a load of bullshit
If you have an opinion - speak it, that's what's freedom of speech is, I don't believe in all the "it may upset Sally the snowflake who Identifys as a toaster" bollocks!!

why is this causing such a big report. lineker is a wanker no more to say

I meant Alex Scott

Who is going to sit in the chair on Saturday. Whoever it is will it be seen as making an opposing stance to lineker or can they say they are contracted to work.
Haven't heard Jason Mohammed say he will not do it yet.
Fri Mar 10, 2023 9:07 pm
Lineker banged on about the plight of the guys that built the stadiums in qatar for the world cup
and even did a documentry on it
then went out there for a month in a 5 star hotel earned millions
he should if that concerned made a statement by giving all the money he eaned that month and distributed it to all those workers or the ones that died families.
There all at it rod stewart the other week paying for scans and mri having a go at the goverment
Easy from a postion such as there's
wanting a pat on the back for playing god.

Sorry Monty but that is so contradictory. How can you suggest Lineker gives his money and then also have a go at Rod for doing exactly that.

BBC just announced there will be no presenters tomorrow. Expect the commentators to be the next to boycott.

Not sure how anyone can criticise Lineker. Surely if the government is unhappy why can’t they debate, rather than “cancel”, the views of an ex-footballer ? Are they afraid of his intellect !?
He’s expressing a view, he’s not a political journalist but is entitled to his views. Worth noting he’s a freelance presenter who would earn double if he worked for Sky.
He hasn’t directly criticised the policy, merely the wording used in putting forward the case.
This is about free speech, he hasn’t promoted hate so surely the BBC and Government can see that ?

Yes it is a bit contradictory when you put it that way but these people seem so say what they like so can we
was'nt the braverman tory woman did' nt she have jewish family which would have been a bit of a bollock drop by lineaker when talking about nazis
"A bit like mine".

Lineker did take in an asylum seeker for a short spell. Seemed like a publicity stunt to me.
I'm told that Gary Lineker lives in one of the whitest, low crime areas in Britain yet campaigns for pretty much open boarders, he just doesn'twant it near him.
The Manchester arena bomber came across on the channel boats. That's just one example of what is coming across the channel.
It's about time we had a referendum on mass immigration. To me, the Brexit vote was primarily about controlling our borders but since then the Tories have let in half a million in one year. Both parties a joke, we were never asked.

My fridge has taken offence at your comment as it also identifies as a toaster.

Cannot stand the guy
He is a sanctimonious, hypocritical, smug champagne Socialist
However he shouldn't be cancelled, although he had numerous warnings and was too arrogant to heed them
Fri Mar 10, 2023 11:06 pm
Pretty much everyone showing ' solidarity ' demanded the cancelation of Matt Le Tissier for merely having an opinion that was opposite to what they thought. Good riddance to the lot of them. I'm just surprised that Wrighty didn't find a reason to draw the racism card yet again , especially as Lineker claimed to be Black a while ago

A lie isn’t an opinion. Le Tissier was spouting objectively untrue, harmful and in many cases (such as claiming the use of crisis actors) outright offensive nonsense. And he wasn’t even fired for that, he was let go alongside the other Soccer Saturday presenters aside from Stelling and Merson as Soccer Saturday viewership was plummeting leading Sky to try and freshen it up (which looks like it has failed to do)
You can’t compare that to Gary Lineker criticising government policy and rhetoric that has been criticised worldwide.
BBC were more than happy for him to jump on and criticise (correctly) Qatar’s human rights record, and now they sack him for criticising the UK’s increasingly authoritarian human rights policies? Insanity.
Well not insanity when you see who’s in charge at the BBC
