Wales will remain largely shut to tourists this summer, warns First Minister

Mark Drakeford says ‘best hope’ is that self-catering accommodation will be opened

By Nigel Morris

June 11th 2020

Wales will remain largely shut over the summer with visitors likely to be restricted to staying in cottages and self-catering flats, the Welsh first minister has warned holidaymakers.

Mark Drakeford said the “best hope” was that tourists would be allowed to sleep in entirely self-contained accommodation because of the risk of spreading coronavirus.

In an interview with i, he indicated that the ban on travelling more than five miles in Wales would remain in place well into July, and said he did not expect mass gatherings such as sports events and concerts to resume until next year.

Totally agree

This makes me worry that its a lot worse in Wales than most of the UK. Nearly 900 in hospital at the moment in Wales out of a UK total of about 7000. That's almost 15% when we are less than 5% of the UK population.

Figures are always misleading when you look deeper into them? But more concerning is his insistence on being the prophet of doom regarding Wales he as not got a clue that by being so negative he is doing irreparable damage to Welsh economy especially tourism which is vital to lots rural areas especially... even today WG says zoos will be looked at on July 9th but no opening date yet
England open in a week or so....

Hes a total idiot its actually better to have hotel bbs open than self catering for one simple important reason that he cant see! Hotels ect have people who live there and can clean it properly (you hope) but self catering who does cleaning? Got to rely on owners coming in or getting in cleaners to do it with no monitoring of quality... so why is he differentiating between them? Plus who the fck wants to go 5miles on holiday as thats as far as can go! :banghead:

Well they’ve told caravan parks they can start taking bookings from July 10th so not sure what he’s in about, as usual.
If self catering private accommodation can also, which makes complete sense (why couldn’t you leave your own house and go and stay in another with its own facilities?), then what is he talking about now??

I’m sure you realise Allan there are 100’s maybe 1000’s of cleaners alone in Pembs and Carmarthen who are desperate to get some work before the season is over, oh well, universal credit hotline will be red hot down that way soon. I doubt many are furlough the amount of cash in hand that goes on....

3.5 million people in Wales.

Hotels, bed and breakfasts, campsites, attractions, people who work in them, people who supply them, people who clean them. All being told tough shit as far as your livelihoods are concerned we've decided to keep Wales closed for the rest of the year.

You would think that Wales is the seething hotbed of the universe as far as this virus is concerned and that we must be kept strictly within a five mile radius or we'll all catch it and die.

Somebody please ask Drakeford what he's got against the Welsh people and the Welsh economy that he wants to keep the country in a stricter and longer lockdown than virtually any other country, even those whose deaths per capita are far greater than they are in Wales.

The long term effects of this bumbling prick's actions now are going to be absolutely devastating for so many people in the country he claims to represent. Won't bother him I suppose with his fat pension.

I’ll be doing the cleaning for mine I think, unless some of the regulars want it, youngish girls. As it stands I’m keeping about 3 or 4 days between bookings for deep cleaning. My wife is a cleaning machine.....
I think you can travel from wherever to a house in Pembrokeshire, but then you are supposed to stay within five miles, which of course none of the locals down there are doing, it’s more like 15/20, depending how far you are from Tesco or Morrison’s etc

The Heath is empty, MS is closed, less than 10 new cases in Cardiff most days now, none in Swansea of late so who knows where these mystery folks are? Saw an interesting stat today whereby 35 people have died in England from covid19 who are under 40 who didn’t have any pre existing conditions. Another 250 between 40+60. Basically, if you are healthy and under 60 you should be ok, ok to go out there and keep the country going etc....
Reckon we are going to have to exist with this for a good two years, maybe longer, so what we going to do?

Exactly, and going through airports and into an aluminium tube with recycled air, you've got a far greater chance of getting covid 19 and infecting other people?

You can't possibly consider allowing airports to open and Wales tourist areas to remain closed, it's counterproductive?

Excellent post, Drakeford is a 3rd rate bureaucrat who has “opted out” of making any difficult decisions because he doesn’t have the bottle or courage

No one is going to listen to him anymore. No one I know actually sticks to the 5 mile rule because it’s ridiculous and just doesn’t make sense

Re: Wales Announce that this year staying closed as

What is totally very wrong is if you live in Cardiff you are subject to different rules to those who live @30 miles east.

Yes I get we are stuck with a poor excuse of an elected Assembly made up of people not competent to make such important decisions. For that I blame the jingoistic one eyed nationalists and the farmers of west wales for voting for a ‘suicidal’ devolution.

Drakeford in particular is unfit for office. The WAG should be ordered by our PM to stand down and abide by UK rules.
