About Bristol City

Bristol City Football Club is a professional association football club based in Bristol, England. Their ground is Ashton Gate, located in the southwest of the city. They currently play in the Championship, the second tier of English football, after winning League One during the 2014–15 season. In sealing the League One title, Bristol City became only the second team to win both the third-tier championship and Football League Trophy double during the same season.

Bristol City won the Welsh Cup – despite being an English club – in 1934. In 1907 they finished runners-up in Football League Division One, which is their highest ever final position. In 1909 they lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United, their only final. Since relegation in 1911, however, they only returned to the top division from 1976 to 1980 and did not contend for any honours then. In 1982, Bristol City became the first English club to suffer three consecutive relegations. They were promoted to the Football League Championship in the 2006–07 season after finishing second in League One but failed to make a second consecutive promotion to the Premier League after they were defeated by Hull City in the 2008 Football League Championship play-off Final at Wembley Stadium. With victories in 1986, 2003 and 2015, Bristol City are now the most successful team in the Football League Trophy.

The club's nickname is "The Robins", and a robin featured on the club's badge from 1976 to 1994. Official club merchandise, including replica kits, still has a label showing a robin. An attempt by the club to alter the badge was abandoned after it was criticised fiercely by fans. The team's main rivals are Bristol Rovers in the Bristol derby and Cardiff City in the Severnside derby, along with other regional teams in the West Country derby.

Bristol City's current manager is Lee Johnson; a former Bristol City player who made 199 appearances for the club. His father, Gary, also managed the club and took City to the Championship play-off final in 2008, where they eventually lost 1–0 to Hull City.

Two teams flying high and a local derby. You would think this is one of those banker draws, and I don't suppose there is any result that would be a major shock, anything can happen in this sort of match and atmosphere. I would take a draw right now, and 1-1 would be a good result. A win would be an amazing bonus.

2 - 1 Bluebirds. Tomlin scores the winner in the 92nd minute. Wurzels then drink their own bodyweight in scrumpy and abduct Lee Johnson who they then burn inside a giant wicker man.

' Saturday Match facts '

Plenty of facts to get your teeth into ahead of tomorrow’s game...

The Robins have won two of their last 17 matches against Cardiff in all competitions (D4 L11).

The Bluebirds have won four of their last six trips to Ashton Gate (L2) since a run of 19 games without a win there in all competitions between 1970 and 2010.

Bristol City, who lost their last home league game 3-0 against Leeds, haven’t lost back to back home league games by three or more goals since April 1932.

Cardiff have more than double the number of points this season after 15 league games (31) than they had at this stage last season (15).

Bobby Reid has scored nine goals in 15 league appearances this season, as many as he’d managed in his previous 119 games.

Omar Bogle, who scored against Ipswich in his last appearance for Cardiff, hasn’t scored in back to back league matches since November 2016 when he played for Grimsby Town in League Two.

All things are pointing toward a rip.roaring derby, so it'll probably be a goalless bore draw! It looks like the wurzels are already winding themselves up, with comments about Warnock, a.player being suspended, Tomlin s return etc add to that both teams are doing well, I think.that we have a no pressure game for Cardiff, yes I'm sure that really isn't the case but Bristol will be nervy and I'm sure there going to go for a big ko early on but I expect Warnocks team to goad them.a bit, quick. side step, one two. Tko. Cardiff.win, 3-2 Tomlin hat trick and two own goals! .

What have the managers said

Lee Johnson: "I think it's close. Obviously Cardiff are above us in the league. They're a very strong outfit, have got good individuals and strength in depth.

"I don't know what the odds are. That'll tell you who is the underdog. You'd like to think that home advantage will give you something and obviously the support that we have here at Ashton Gate means that the players love playing here at the moment."

Neil Warnock: "I always look forward to [playing] Bristol City. I always get such a warm welcome at Ashton Gate.

"It's strange really because we're second in the league and I think we'll be underdogs given the way they're playing and the team they beat — Fulham — and they've beaten Premier League clubs to get Man United in the next round of the cup.

"I quite like the challenge of going there and trying to come away with a result."

Who are the key players

Bobby Reid (Bristol City): The 23-year-old's conversion from midfielder to forward has been a roaring success and seen him score 10 goals in 18 games so far this season. A product of the club's academy, Reid has learned from loan spells at Plymouth and Cheltenham and become a key player in Johnson's outfit.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (Cardiff City): With Warnock likely to prime his side for counter-attacking, the impetus of Mendez-Laing on the break could be all-important. He has the pace and power to trouble Bristol City, whose defence can be their Achilles heel. A Man Of The Match display against Ipswich in midweek has boosted his confidence.

Bristol City pair Eros Pisano and Nathan Baker remain doubts for the clash with Cardiff at Ashton Gate.

Full-back Pisano injured his hamstring during the 2-0 win at Fulham on what was his first start in the Sky Bet Championship for two months. Central defender Baker missed Tuesday's game at Craven Cottage with a knee injury picked up at Sunderland last weekend. Loan striker Cauley Woodrow returns to the squad after being unable to face his parent club Fulham.
Joe Bennett will be absent again for Cardiff after missing the 3-1 win over Ipswich in midweek. So Lee Peltier switches over to left-back with Callum Paterson on the opposite flank.
Kenneth Zohore and Aron Gunnarsson face fitness tests on ankle injuries, with Anthony Pilkington ruled out by a dead leg. Matthew Connolly is set to return to the squad after an ankle problem.
