Cardiff sit rock-bottom when it comes to goals scored from open play in the Championship this year. No one has scored fewer than the Bluebirds' 15 open-play goals. Only Preston and Rotherham United average fewer shots-per-game than Cardiff (10.6) this season, too.

And it shows. Cardiff look far too easy to defend against and all too rarely trouble the opposition goalkeeper. One marker which serves to provide positivity is that, in total contrast to open-play goals, the Bluebirds top the table for set-piece goals with 16 (or 18 if you include penalties). Particularly when you factor in the 30 league games which have been played this season.

Erol Bulut has opted for a large, target-man type of striker in Kion Etete recently, but Cardiff rarely supply him with crosses. He is largely used as an out for Jak Alnwick in goal, but he is still learning how to keep hold of the ball and win headers against gnarled centre-backs.

Cardiff also play with inverted wingers who want to cut inside, thus stopping any chance of a lofted cross into the 6ft 5ins striker. Couple that with full backs who are reluctant to bomb on and overlap and Cardiff are often incredibly narrow and restricted in their paths into the area.


The tempo is far too slow, too. Cardiff are joint-bottom when it comes to goals scored from counter-attacks, with a grand total of zero, an art which is perfected by the speed and accuracy of a breakaway. Preston North End's first goal by Emil Riis came by virtue of an excellent counter-attack on Saturday. Cardiff's lack of pace and ability to really cut through a defence has been telling this season.

It was a surprise to see Rubin Colwill, arguably Cardiff's form player during a pretty poor couple of months for the team, dropped to the bench for Saturday's defeat by the Lilywhites, but we do have to factor in the volume of games this month. He does, however, have to play in Cardiff's strongest XI.

Cheers, The way Bulut plays, it would of been a waste of time buying Kieffer Moore or buy in a quality Striker.

They started Saturdays game really good IMO -

We seem to have a few players that are willing to give their all - unfortunately not enough of them. I worry we are not attacking the whole game and we have no full on striker - however the quality we do have needs to be giving 100 percent from the get go.

I wondered why Ruben was left out of the game as he has come on in leaps and bounds recently. I agree tactics need to change as it seems after 15 mins the opposition susses us out and from then on we are blocked all the way. We need to play with full knowledge of the team we are playing and their tactics otherwise we will not improve - each game - different tactics.. and for gods sake - if its not working change it ... don't just go on regardless.

Hopefully now Rambo is back he can influence the game on the pitch, and we have sorely missed O'Dowda ...

We will miss McGuiness ... lets hope the new guys can add something amazing ... Keon is getting better but is still not quite there.

Forwards isolated with no support, we are two easy to defend against but if Etete/Bowler/Grant has the ball they always have 2 players on them and no one to pass to so it goes backwards

Good point, im sure im wrong, at least I hope I am, but full knowledge of the opposition seems like its them on us, not us on them. And its probably common knowledge in the championship we dont change shape, dont like the high press, and struggle to get through teams who put 10 men behind the ball and end up going sideways and back. Add to that balls into the box along the floor towards a late runner at the far post, we have concede lots of those this season. Predictable.

Agree, lets hope these new boys can settle in and improve us.

It's so obvious why we're failing but Bulut continues down the blind alley. We're outnumbered by opposition defenders because we have 1 front man and two inverted wingers. Change it Erol - if you can't or won't, perhaps the Championship isn't for you.

We have known this for nearly 3 yrs and so have our famous CCFC Transfer Committee.

We haven't got time for the new striker to get up to speed - he needs to start against WBA and ideally have Meite, Robinson or Grant alongside him as a two man front line. Get Bowler on left wing, Tanner on right and just have a fking go.

If we lose trying I don't mind but I've had it with the turgid defensive crab-athon, borefest football.

then watch other clubs paying silly money snapping up all the best strikers

To some degree both Chopra and Bothroyd were both rejects. DJ just brought out the best in them..

All bang on Annis. Interesting to see some of Bulut's most ardent supporters now turning. Sadly his days are numbered,
and any tactics or style of play he stubbornly refuses to change, are floored!

Birmingham, Preston, QPR along with the championship bigwigs have all easily sniffed him out. He needs a dose of "Front Foot Medicine" to get this side further up the field. Otherwise we'll all be home, watching re runs of Crossroads and Upstairs Downstairs
