Here's a round-up of some of the key stories of the day:

The recorded number of daily coronavirus cases in the UK rose by 6,178 on Wednesday - up from 4,926 yesterday, while there were a further 37 deaths within 28 days of a positive test.

The government has defended their latest coronavirus measures as "balanced, targeted and proportionate" amid criticism from some scientists and business leaders. A 22:00 closing time for hospitality venues and bigger fines for rule breakers are among the new restrictions. But Prof John Edmunds, who advises the government, said they did not go "anywhere near far enough".

UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has promised to update MPs on Thursday on the government's plans to "continue protecting jobs through the winter". With new coronavirus measures in England set to hit some sectors of the economy hard, the government is under increasing pressure to set out a replacement for its job retention scheme.

They go to work test positive for covid. My father in law is in their nursing home.He tests positive along with several other residents. We had a call from his doctor today asking for a 'Do Not Resuscitate Order' to be put in place.

If this moron knew he arrived home with the virus WTF is he doing spreading it about?

It's the same as the AIDS infected that slept around intentionally.

If this is correct he should be arrested, fined and locked up.

Selfish idiot!

Covid: Cardiff 'could go into local lockdown'

Wales' capital city is facing a local lockdown as coronavirus case numbers rise "rapidly".

Cardiff council leader Huw Thomas has warned of potential restrictions on travel and different households mixing.

He told a virtual meeting of the authority that over the past seven days, the area has seen 38.2 cases per 100,000 people.

Mr Thomas said the city was on the verge of entering the Welsh Government's "red zone".

He said if that was to happen "then I fully expect that we will be implementing further restrictions as we have seen elsewhere" in south Wales.

Cardiff is home to 366,903 people and would be the seventh area to have tighter restrictions imposed.

People living in Caerphilly, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend, Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport cannot leave their areas without a reasonable excuse.

Should Cardiff follow them into lockdown, it would mean more than a 1.2 million people - about a third of Wales' population - would be under tighter restrictions than the rest of the country.

Correct me if I'm totally wrong but 38.2 per 100k people means that give or take couple people there are 120 infected people in cardiff out of 360k why have they locked down city based on those figures? Sheer madness and smacks of desperation.... llanelli and Swansea locked down now as well :banghead:

yes it is madness.. firstly i doubt they have actually tested 100k ,it been rounded up..
and secondly , those they have tested { which is what they have based this per 100k on } are not random. they are mostly people who are either showing symptoms or feel they have been in contact with someone positive..
to arrive at a more accurate figure { which clearly is being avoided like the plague } you have to randomly test.. not weigh the result...

Covid: Lockdowns for Cardiff, Swansea and Llanelli

Wales' two biggest cities will go into lockdown as part of new restrictions being imposed in three areas.

Cardiff and the county of Swansea go into lockdown at 18:00 BST on Sunday, 24 hours after the Carmarthenshire town of Llanelli.

It means 1.5 million people, about half of Wales' population, will be under lockdown by the end of the weekend.

But cases in Caerphilly, the first area to lockdown, have fallen significantly, Health Minister Vaughan Gething said.

The restrictions will be the same as those already affecting people living in Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend, Blaenau Gwent, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Caerphilly, which are already in lockdown.

Mr Gething said people in Cardiff and Swansea should not "treat this weekend as a big blow-out".

He also said cases in Carmarthenshire had "overwhelmingly" been linked to Llanelli, with eight out of 10 cases there.

Coronavirus: More than a quarter of UK under stricter rules

More than a quarter of the UK population is set to be under stricter coronavirus rules, as new measures come into force this weekend.

From Saturday in England, households in Leeds, Wigan, Stockport and Blackpool are banned from mixing in each other's homes or gardens.

In Wales, Llanelli became subject to new rules at 18:00 BST, with Cardiff and Swansea to follow 24 hours later.

It comes as the rate at which the virus is spreading appears to be speeding up.

There have been 6,042 new coronavirus infections in the UK over the past 24 hours, according to the latest government figures - and 34 deaths among those who tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 28 days.

It marks the fourth consecutive day that new infections across the UK have topped 6,000.
Wales reported 370 new cases on Saturday.

7 months and not one dissenting voice amongst leading politicians. 7 months and not one awkward question. 7 months and not a single acknowledgement of the huge toll in mental health, missed cancer [etc] testing, treatment. Politicians - and in these times leading Health spokespeople as well - should always be held to account. We're having an unpleasant glimpse of what life is like without Democracy..

Covid lockdown: Three more Welsh counties face local restrictions

Three more counties are to be placed under local lockdowns on Monday, the Welsh Government has announced.

Neath Port Talbot, Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan will have tighter Covid-19 restrictions from 18:00 BST on Monday.

It means half of Wales' 22 local authority areas will be under local lockdowns, after rules came into force in Cardiff and Swansea on Sunday.

Almost two million people in Wales - two-thirds of the population - will be under local lockdowns.

Vale of Glamorgan council leader Neil Moore said it had not been an easy decision but pointed to the rate of infection rising to 34.4 people per 100,000 in the county borough.

Covid-19: Meeting others in pubs to be illegal in North East

Lockdown restrictions in north-east England are to be tightened in a bid to halt the rise in Covid-19 cases.

The tougher measures will affect about two million people and were announced by Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

He said mixing between households in any indoor setting, such as pubs and restaurants, will be against the law from Wednesday.

Households in the region had already been advised to avoid mixing but the new ban will be enforced with fines.

Maximum £6,400 fine

Anyone found to be breaking the rules and taking part in an illegal gathering could be dispersed by police, the Department for Health and Social Care said.

Those over 18 can be fined and could face a £200 charge for their first offence, which would be halved if paid within 14 days.

Second offences would incur a £400 fine, which would then double for each subsequent offence up to a maximum of £6,400.

Mr Hancock told the House of Commons that cases in the region had "risen sharply" and the rate of infections was now more than 100 cases per 100,000.

Think they've made a balls up of what they've said? But looking at it it's no surprise people dont don't know what they mean?
In the affected areas, people will no longer be allowed to mix with anyone outside their own household in any indoor setting (although support bubbles are exempt) In other words, you will be banned from going for a drink or a meal with someone you don't live with, in a pub or restaurant. The BBC has been told mixing in pub gardens or outdoor restaurant spaces will not be illegal but goes against advice....
Think it means only people allowed in pubs/restaurants are from same household or extended households.. not joe public. :o

Boris Johnson 'misspoke' over North East Covid restrictions

Boris Johnson has apologised and said he "misspoke" when asked to clarify details of new tighter coronavirus restrictions in north-east England.

A new rule, making it illegal for households to mix indoors, including in pubs, affects nearly two million people and comes into force at midnight.

However, confusion arose over whether this included outdoor settings such as pub beer gardens.

Labour said the PM was "grossly incompetent" for not knowing the rules.

It comes as the UK recorded 7,143 confirmed coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, a new high since mass testing began. Deaths recorded within 28 days of a positive test also rose to 71, the highest total since 1 July.

Meanwhile, about 500,000 people in four council areas in north Wales are to face local lockdown restrictions from 18:00 BST on Thursday.

The UK is at a critical moment with coronavirus, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned. He was giving the 100th Downing Street briefing of the pandemic.

Chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance added that there was "no cause for complacency" and that it is "not under control"
It came as the number of new cases in the UK was above 7,000 for the second day in a row, with 71 new deaths reported

Also in the UK, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has promised MPs votes "wherever possible" on England or UK-wide coronavirus rules before they come into force - but warned that some urgent regulations could not be held up

Eight patients have died with coronavirus at a hospital where 60 cases have been linked to an outbreak on the site.

Planned surgeries have been temporarily stopped at Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf, as part of a plan to manage the outbreak.
