‘Absolute joke’, ‘Been robbed’ – Plenty of Cardiff City fans are furious with rumoured transfer agreement

By Jacob Potter

28/09/2020

Cardiff City are set to sell Callum Paterson to Sheffield Wednesday for a fee in the region of £500,000.

Paterson has been with the club since 2017, when he signed from Scottish side Heart of Midlothian.

He has gone on to make 106 appearances for the Bluebirds, and has chipped in with 21 goals in his time with the club to date.

The forward made 42 appearances for Cardiff last season, as they narrowly missed out on promotion into the Premier League, after a defeat to Fulham in their play-off semi-final.

Paterson hasn’t featured at all in the 2020/21 season though, which dropped a sizeable hint that his future could be elsewhere, with a move to Sheffield Wednesday seemingly imminent.

He’ll sign for Garry Monk’s side, who are clearly keen to add to their attacking options, with Jordan Rhodes being the only recognised senior striker at this moment in time.

Plenty of Cardiff City supporters took to social media to voice their frustrations over the fee agreed for Paterson.

Take a look at the best of the reaction from Twitter below….

Cannot stress enough how much I hate this bit of business

— Owen Gardner (@Owengardner2703)

What a servant! Gutted to see him leave, bargain for Sheffield Wednesday!

— MZ (@CalumEmms)

Awful business

— Nathan Tucker (@NathannTuckerr)

Been robbed here, not one of the best technical players, but I’d put him in over any of the 11 which played yesterday because none of the show there heart Paterson shows

— KianRees24 (@kianrees24)

Gutted

(@MillieCcfc) millie power

I feel sick

(@liam_brett7) — Liam Brett (@liam_brett7)

Selling him for 500k is an absolute joke

— Rhys (@rhyscardiff)

Horrific if we are letting him go for that.

— James C Roberts (@JamesCRoberts94)

Got bargain there for that price

— bluebirdsgossip (@bluebirdsgossip)

Good business for wednesday but as for cardiff our board couldnt run a bath never mind a football club

— Pmr (@pmr6627)

We’ve had our pants down. He’s been a great player for us, played everywhere, consistent, scores goals and works harder than anyone. Absolutely gutted.

Both the sales of Patto and Etheridge have been poor business, should have had £2m easily for NE and should have over £1m for Patto too. Thought CCFC was ultimately a business and that Tan, Dalman and Choo were all elite business men in their own rights.... piss poor sales and doesn’t leave NH with a lot of finances to get players in either

I'm surprised at some of these responses.

I think Paterson's time was up and really isn't going to fit in with the way Harris wants to retain possession more.

He's done a great job for us but I think this is one of those moves that is good for club and player.

It would look a whole lot better if we signed a first team replacement mind !!

We always seem to pay over the odds murphy and reid 20 million plus and always seem to give other clubs a bargain apart from moore From wigan who where desperate for money so agree with some that we are not running things on a buisness footing apart from getting shot of the sqaud.

I think it’s a sensible move, obviously not part of plans, unfortunately his best role was when he okYed as striker, however, kieffer and Robert in front of him.
No good at right back, midfield.. hmmm prefer caulks and bacuna.. so get a few and a large earner off payroll..
Oh , and a question? Have us fans been robbed? Is not our money? No, VT is bankrolling this club, so it’s his financial loss.
Good luck Patts, but let’s move on .

So we put a £1m price tag on him no one buys him because a player is only worth what a club is willing to pay? That will leave us with a worthless player not in team and costing 20k a week to be unused sub makes sense.. :o

Re: ‘Absolute joke’, ‘Been robbed’ – Plenty of Cardiff City

His wages at £20k a week are 2,500 season tickets at £400.

Getting a fee and removing a year's heavy commitment is good work by club.

Football is to have a long overdue financial reality check and chamionship clubs can't pay a £1,000,000 wages to squad players and second choice goalies.

We all like what Pato brings and there are others I'd prefer to go instead, Flint being one, but you can only sell what a buyer wants to pay for.

Its a shame Warnocks new club don't have any money either as he should otherwise be a taker for some of his own past mistakes he has left us with.

Sell our second choice keeper, make 2mill and save 20k a week in wages and people moan. Have him sat on the bench all season picking up a massive wage and then leave for free in the summer and people would have moaned. The club can't win. Ideally we could have got more for paterson but i don't think anyone other than wednesday were interested in him. At the end of the day he would have never started before moore and he doesnt really fit in anywhere else. So we've got a small fee for a player who wouldnt have featured much and have saved 20k a week by doing so. How is that bad business?

No idea why people are complaining

We got fees for 2 people who are not in the first team and probably saved £2 million a year in wages, to me with football finances in a worse state than they have been for 30 years that’s good business

With the transfer deadline only a few weeks away just watch what bargains become available with clubs desperate to offload their higher earners

Thats how i see it. Disappointed they are going but it makes sense financially. Losing these players will only be a bad thing if the team isn't strengthened else where with the funds received and wages saved.

so are we going with a very thin squad to save 2mill in wages ...or going to pick up high earners being offloaded ?

the squad is too thin and the more you deplete it the less are the options to change anything..

Picking up high earners in positions we actually need would be better than having high earners who won't feature.

£2mill in wages on two players is pretty substantial in the championship, particularly if they will be sat on the bench most of the time. Or would you prefer the club to be run in an unsuitable way? We have no idea what sort of players the club are looking at. Could be more loan options or could be cheaper players. Either way, we need pace and creativity from midfiled. Paterson is pretty one dimensional and doesn't offer that.

Selling Pato is a bad move if we dont replace him with an upgrade.

It's likely we dont replace him at all which is why fans are frustrated.

generally half the transfers at all clubs do not work out .... and we lost our keeper after 1 hour of football last season...so no smithies no play offs... as for Pato, he brings something different .. and we win more football matches when he has played than when he does not.

Why is that likely? Harris has stated he expects more signings and that it would be a 1 out 1 in process. If we don't bring anyone else in then fair enough, the club does deserve to be bashed.

Unfortunately cardiff arnt in a position financially to have a player on massive wages in reserve for a what if scenario. What does Paterson offer thats different then? He would be a like for like switch with moore and moore is a much better player and a natural striker. Paterson wouldn't have made a difference in the games we lost this season as he would be receiving the same poor service moore is.

it doesnt have to be instead of Moore, everyone seems to have got caught up in this one or other... he has played elsewhere for us probably more than he has as a striker. and he really isnt as bad when we are in possession as some make out, he reads the game very well . he will win headers, will score { more if up top } but will chip in no matter where he plays and will get you lots of free kicks and corners.. but without the ball he stops teams playing...the running around bit and looking busy is easy seen lots do it to show they are putting it in who never quite put pressure on or are so out of position it creates problems elsewhere.. ..doing it to the effect he does isnt..its not even about actually winning the ball but causing stray passes/headers which we then have a chance of turning over because of his presence.. its why Harris was picking him before whatever happened, happened.... something obviously did because he went from regular starter to 6th sub over night... which tbh is of more concern than him leaving... and i do think he would have made a difference.. would be hard not to ,was so bland and predictable..

Yes he wins headers and yes he makes life awkward for the opposition. But his general hold up play and ability with the ball at his feet arnt great. Tomlin doesn't do anything that paterson does well but its Tomlin we are missing the most and its Tomlin we need to replace when unfit. Not somene who's role in the team would be to hopefully win 2nd balls from.

Totally agree with us missing tomlin more.

Patto has served us well and always given 100%.

But Moore and glatzel are ahead up front. He isn’t viewed as a right back. He hasn’t been played in midfield. He’s an expensive back up option now. Tomlin is a game changer and genuinely does things none of the others can do. He is equally committed on the pitch and has a knack of also getting goals. Funds should be used in getting back up for him and quality attacking players to supply the Moore and glatzel

i think Tomlin is a special talent and a fit version that gives you 90mins is way out of our league tbh... not that our manager is even giving him 10 minutes where he is likely to do the most damage..but yes id like some fast flowing crisp passing attacking stuff too.. we do not have the personnel.. so failing that keeping options would be preferable to the much of a muchness bunch we have. in this case, if a manager is not going to pick a player he may as well go... should this be happening is a different conversation.. personally id pick hanibal lector if i thought he was good enough..

We'd struggle to get someone of Tomlins quality but he creates space for players and brings the CF and wingers into the game. We need some creativity in the middle as we are very 1 dimensional. vaulks, bacuna and ralls are very similar players. A lot of running around but don't have that creative ability. Dropping paterson into midfield (if he's not to replace moore) just adds another person who fits that bill. If things don't improve and we don't bring in a number 10, I'd play ojo or Murphy there. Would even give one of the youngster's a run. Cant do much worse atm.

Hopefully we can use the funds and wages saved from Etheridge and Paterson leaving to bring in someone to improve the midfield. Otherwise we will struggle all season.
