Emiliano Sala search team says there is 'absolutely no chance' of finding survivors

Thursday 24th January 2019

A pilot involved in the search to find the missing plane Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson were flying on says there is "absolutely no chance" of finding survivors.

The plane in which the new Bluebirds signing and Mr Ibbotson were travelling in to Cardiff disappeared on Monday near the Channel Islands after taking off from Nantes.

The light aircraft disappeared from radar around the Channel Islands after requesting to descend. We've got live coverage of the ongoing search here.

Police confirmed at 7.50am today that they are beginning a coastal air search, with no lifeboats being used today.

Fans have been discussing flare sightings and buildings on Burhou Island, near Alderney, and search rescuers have addressed questions around that, saying the area has been thoroughly searched since the plane disappeared off radar.

Police confirmed at 1.20pm on Thursday that Burhou Island had been searched by foot and "no trace of the aircraft or those on board has been found".

Now, Mike Tidd, the pilot flying the Channel Islands Air Search plane looking for the missing Piper PA-46 Malibu, has told ITV News that “there is absolutely no chance of finding anybody alive.”

He said: "The area has been very well covered, there is absolutely no chance of finding anybody alive now.

"The only thing that we might be able to do would be pin-point where the aircraft went in but I think the radar trace is going to be the best opportunity of doing that."

He said he does not think the search from the air will continue either.

Guernsey harbour master Captain David Barker told BBC Radio Guernsey earlier on Thursday that no lifeboats would be used today, nor would any British or French assets be requested.

"Air Search One, our search aircraft, is about to launch," said Capt Barker.

"He will do a coastal search up around Alderney, Burhou, down the French coast, including the north coast of Jersey today and back over Sark.

"We're not launching any lifeboats today, nor are we requesting any assets from the UK or France.

"We consider that the hopes of finding someone alive have faded to almost zero now.

"But we are not giving up. We are going to conduct this sweep of the coastline and we are targeting a life raft. We will review our continued search plan as soon as that is complete."

The search operation was suspended on Wednesday evening for the day after a nine-hour operation found "no trace of the missing plane".

I think we need to come round to the fact that it could take years or we may never find this aircraft or what happened.

Unfortunatly where the plane went missing from radar is one of the deepest parts of the channel and we dont really know exactly where it went in. The search area is huge and would cost a fortune to search under water for such a small aircraft.

Hard to accept this , nobody knows where there are. Looks like they may drowned in the sea sadly.

All this talk of transfers seems so irrelevant with the news that the search for the plane Emiliano Sala was travelling in is now over. A talented guy just trying to further his career with all his hopes and dreams about to come true. Puts football firmly in perspective

I find it unbelievable in this day and age they can't track a plane.

Such sad news, RIP both.

This area of sea has to be the most surveyed body of water in the world. If you can get lost there it's terrifying thinking about anywhere else.

Rest in peace Bluebird and pilot.

Emiliano Sala: search for footballer and pilot called off
Press Association - Thurs 24 Jan 2019 15.52 GMT

Guernsey harbourmaster says chances that men survived after plane disappeared ‘are extremely remote’

The search for the missing plane carrying footballer Emiliano Sala and his pilot has been called off and “the chances of survival at this stage are extremely remote”, Guernsey harbourmaster, Capt David Barker has said.

In a update posted on Twitter by Guernsey police, Barker said the active search for the missing plane had ended.

He said: “My team have just met to review the search and rescue operation which has been under way since the plane disappeared on Monday night.

“Despite the best efforts of air and search assets from the Channel Islands, UK and France, which has covered an area of approximately 1,700 sq miles – with a significant amount of this searched more than once – and having examined mobile phone data and satellite imagery, we have been unable to find any trace of the aircraft, the pilot or the passenger.

“There has been over 24 hours of continuous searching, with 80 hours combined flying time across three planes and five helicopters. Two lifeboats have also been involved, as well as assistance from various passing ships and fishing boats.”

Cardiff City striker Sala, 28, and pilot Dave Ibbotson, 59, have been missing since their plane disappeared from radar over the Channel as the footballer was being flown to Cardiff having been sold to the Welsh club by Nantes for £13m.

Barker added: “We reviewed all the information available to us, as well as knowing what emergency equipment was on board, and have taken the difficult decision to end the search.

“The chances of survival at this stage are extremely remote.

“Next of kin have been informed of this development, and my thoughts go out to the family of the pilot and passenger at this most difficult of times.

“This has been a very thorough and extensive search, co-ordinated from the Guernsey-based joint emergency services control centre and has seen exemplary cooperation from all countries involved, for which I would like to extend my personal thanks.

“The final aircraft searching for the missing plane and those on board has now landed. Although we are no longer actively searching, the incident remains open and we will be broadcasting to all vessels and aircraft in the area to keep a look out for any trace of the aircraft. This will continue indefinitely.”

Very very sad news.

Thoughts go to both families and also to those connected with FC Nantes, they have lost a close friend and someone they love.

He may have never played for us, but he’ll never be forgotten by all to do with Cardiff City.

RIP to both of them.

Can I ask what the response was regarding the potential distress flares?

The photo I saw banded about certainly looked like flare tracks. Was this confirmed as a credible image/legitimate source?

Was it explained if this was relating to a separate issue?

Did it fully trace the location?

I haven't heard too much in regards to this and can't believe it wasn't immediately acted upon on after dawn on Tuesday morning.

I'm still expecting the unexpected, and expect to do so until the news we don't want to hear is confirmed.

Football stars have taken to social media to urge authorities to continue the search for missing Argentinian striker Emiliano Sala.

The Piper Malibu plane carrying Sala and pilot David Ibbotson back to Cardiff after completing his club record £15million move disappeared over the English Channel on Monday night.

Guernsey Police announced they have called off the search on Thursday night and rated the chances of survival as "extremely remote".

But players and supporters are urging them not to give up their efforts to find the 28-year-old, taking to social media using the hashtag "NoDejendeBuscar", a Spanish phrase meaning "don't stop searching".

New Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain sent a video message in support of continuing the search, whilst Sergio Aguero said "we do not want to give up, we want to hold on to hope".

Aguero's Manchester City team-mate Nicolas Otamendi and Newcastle's Fede Fernandez also posted a video messages, plus former Real Madrid star Ezequial Garay uploaded a moving photo along with the hashtag.
