The Opposition

Rotherham United Football Club, nicknamed The Millers,[1] is an English professional football club based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, that competes in The Football League Championship, the second tier in the English football league system.

Founded in 1925 as a merger between Rotherham Town (1899) and Rotherham County (1870),[2] the club's colours were initially yellow and black, but later evolved into the more traditional red and white.[3] Rotherham United play their home games at New York Stadium, a 12,000 capacity all-seater stadium, having previously played since its foundation at Millmoor for 101 years. Since joining the football league back in 1925, Rotherham have spent the majority of their time in Division Three (League One) and Division Two (Championship).[4] They have never played in the top tier of the English Football League system.

The Millers featured in the inaugural League Cup final against Aston Villa in 1961,[5] and won the 1996 Football League Trophy. They also achieved two separate back to back promotions in 1999–2001 and 2012–2014.

History and description

New York Stadium was built to provide Rotherham United with a new permanent home after they were forced to leave their traditional home Millmoor and temporarily move into Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield.

Rotherham obtained planning permission in 2010, and started construction in the summer of 2011. The stadium came at a cost of £20 million.

Rotherham gradually opened the New York Stadium in the summer of 2012 with a series of events. They played their first league match at the New York Stadium on the 18th of August 2012 against Burton Albion (3-0).

The stadium derived its name from the Guest and Chimes steel factory that once stood at the site, and which used to manufacture the fire hydrants for the city of New York.

New York Stadium has a total of 600 VIP places. The stadium can be easily expanded with another 4,000 seats.

Steve Evans gives www.themillers.co.uk his team news...
Rotherham United boss Steve Evans will once again be without captain Lee Frecklington for his side’s clash with Cardiff City at AESSEAL New York Stadium on Saturday.

The Millers skipper missed out on the fixture with Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday night and will once again watch on from the sidelines as he recovers from a calf injury sustained at The Valley a week ago.

“He’s not quite right. He’s strained a few fibres in his calf. We’ll be hopeful for next weekend but certainly not for Saturday,” Evans told www.themillers.co.uk.

“It’s just subject to healing now. He’s a quick healer by standards if you like so we’ve got more of a chance of it being next week rather than a week after. Normally when you have a strain like that the medical team will say two to three weeks but it really depends on the individual.”

Frecklington had a frustrating time with injuries at the back end of the 2014/15 campaign and Evans is keen to ensure he remains upbeat throughout the duration of his recovery.

“Lee’s had a poor time in respect of injuries over the last 12 months and nobody wants to play more than him so it’s my job to reassure him and keep his spirits high.
“Everyone is good other than we miss Lee and big Kirk Broadfoot who will be available for selection at St. Andrew’s subject to training and no injuries and we’re hoping that Frecks matches that.”

Meanwhile, defender Joe Mattock returned to action recently following an early season injury and has impressed the Millers’ manager on his return to the left back berth.

“He’s a terrific player and he’ll only get better,” Evans enthused.

“He missed a bit of pre-season as well. When it settles down to one game a week it will help. We need players to do some work in between to get that little sharpness."

Vital Preview - Rotherham v Cardiff

Vital Football

18/09/15

Cardiff's Championship season continues against Rotherham at the New York Stadium on Saturday; with this a traditional 3pm kick-off.

A reaction to a first league defeat of the season is something Cardiff are looking to do this weekend as the Bluebirds go to Rotherham, who are bottom of the table!

Rotherham captain Lee Frecklington (calf) misses out with Kirk Broadfoot (suspension) as he sits out the last of his 10-match ban.

Russell Slade could bring in Bruno Manga (knee), who he previously said would have to win his place back, for a first start.

Ben Turner (ankle) and Federico Macheda (back) are still out.

Rotherham's record against Cardiff isn't something we'll be happy with as they've lost on two of the last 22-matches!

The Bluebirds will hope for a positive result, but will this happen?

Whatever line up Slade goes with expectancy will be high and ahead of the game we're looking for your views on what way you think it will go, which obviously requires you to vote in the latest poll one of three ways...

Match Preview

Cardiff, who will be visiting the New York Stadium having lost their first game of the season against Hull City on Tuesday night, will be looking to bounce back with an emphatic win over a Rotherham side who are yet to excite this season, and are still searching for their first win.

Evans does have a bright spark in prospect Jonson Clarke-Harris, who is the Millers' top scorer so far with three goals, but unless the Millers can find goals from another source, Evans won't be donning that Sombrero come May.

Rotherham have also conceded more goals than anyone else in the second tier this season, but themselves have only failed to score in one game so far this campaign, so there promises to be goals at the New York Stadium.

Cardiff meanwhile have enjoyed a solid start to their second season back in the Sky Bet Championship, and after a disappointing season last year will be hoping to stay in the promotion picture they currently find themselves entwined in.

There is no doubt about the ability of the players, but a mixture of key players such as Bruce Ecuele-Manga and Federico Machedo performing on a consistent basis, and the home crowds fully backing their squad, will go some way to forming a large part of any promotion push.

Coming into the game, Cardiff are obviously massive favourites, but Rotherham will be looking to scrape any points they can get against Slade's side, who appear to have got their mojo back.
