The Cardiff City boss says he expected to be sacked on the weekend and is still unsure what the future holds
His future, however, is far from certain.
Mackay has opened up on his fear of being sacked on the weekend
Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay is to meet with Vincent Tan to discuss his future at the club.
Mackay told a press conference he wanted that meeting to take place today but the offer was declined. But he said it was "good of the club" to offer the meeting.
He also said he was expecting to be sacked on the weekend.
Mackay also praised Cardiff City fans for their show of support on Saturday, saying: "Having backing like that will live with me forever."
It was unclear as late as Friday afternoon whether Mackay would still be in charge of the Bluebirds come last Saturday, when they travelled to face Liverpool at Anfield.
Though he did take charge of that game, there were fears that he would lose his job soon after, with his relationship with owner Tan having broken down completely.
But the immediate threat over his future was lifted after the game at Anfield, with Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman saying Mackay would not be sacked.
His future, however, is far from certain.
Speaking at the Bluebirds' training base at the Vale Hotel, Mackay said: "I will not resign. I love my job here. I love working and living in Cardiff and I'm proud of my team and I have a determination to look after that.
"I have been asked to meet the owner and Mehmet and it’s good of the club to offer that.
"I wanted that meeting to be today and that was declined or tomorrow and that was also declined.
"I did feel I was going to lose my job on the weekend. The email deeply upset me. I declined to resign and expected to be sacked over the weekend.
"I'm proud to be the manager here and I think I should be the manager here. I will keep doing what I'm doing and if someone wants to do something different that's up to them.
"I don't know if we can talk. Mehmet has been trying to do this for three months, as have I. There are certain areas that have to be addressed that were in the email. I will find out when I go to the meeting."
With a Boxing Day fixture against Southampton, any meeting is now likely to be after the Christmas period.
"At that point I will take stock of where I am.
"Mehmet is a good man and a sensible man. But he's not the man who makes the decisions. Ultimately he will not make the decision. That still has to be addressed."
Mackay praised the fans for their support on Saturday and called them the "lifeblood" of the club.
"It’s been humbling to hear the support we had from our fans and the Liverpool fans," he said.
"Having a backing like that will live with me forever.
"To give the fans a clap was something I wanted to do for the support they had given me.
"Our fans are the lifeblood of the club. When I'm gone and the owner is gone the fans will be the lifeblood of the club. I am thankful for the way they have got behind the club.
"I was disappointed to lose. I don’t like being beaten but I was proud of the team in the second half. I was delighted for our fans that we did that.
"At half time I thought it could have been a rough ride but I got back into it.
"At the end I was proud to go to Anfield, one of the biggest clubs in Europe to enjoy and I think our fans did enjoy it.
"There is no more pressure on me now. The team are working so hard and have come up with reasonable performances and good results."
Mackay said Southampton would be a tough fixture and said they are a model he would like to follow.
"It's going to be tough against Southampton. They are a model we've been trying to follow. They came up as the best team in the Championship the year before we got promoted. They invested well and did the right thing.
"They stayed in the Premier League, invested heavily again, and are making a real good go of it this year.
"We've invested heavily and you have to when you go up. The next step is to invest again. With good people it will work.
"The club has worked very well in the last couple of years, especially when Gethin Jenkins, Alan Whitely and TG were here. Mehmet Dalman gives us a stable hand but the owner is a man who makes the decisions.
"I put the structure in place with the recruitment side of the club. We built a department with various levels of checks to stop mistakes being made. Buying players, how much they cost and the dossier goes through several people.
"The players have trained as they always do. We have gone through our structure of a normal day today and I have not lost focus. We have big games to prepare for and no matter what goes on, that's my number one focus for this club and it always will be.
"My representative has been talking to Mehmet in recent days because I have been busy looking after the football side."

After expecting to be fired over the weekend, Cardiff manager Malky Mackay says the club's owner won't meet with him.
The Scot looked certain to lose his job after receiving an e-mail ultimatum last week from owner Vincent Tan to resign or be fired. Mackay refused to resign and chairman Mehmet Dalman said Sunday the manager would remain in charge for the "foreseeable future."
Mackay says "the e-mail deeply upset me. I declined to resign and expected to be sacked over the weekend."
Mackay says two requests to meet Tan this week had been rejected, and adds "I don't know if we can talk. Mehmet has been trying to do this for three months."

Mackay remains in charge of the Bluebirds despite receiving an ultimatum from controversial owner Vincent Tan to resign or face the sack.
The Scot admitted he expected to be relieved of his duties over the course of the weekend, but instead was given a reprieve of sorts by chairman Mehmet Dalman, who said Mackay would be in charge for the "foreseeable future".
That statement did include the caveat that there would need to be a thawing of relations between owner and manager, but Mackay remains in charge for now at least, with home games against Southampton and Sunderland looming.
But when asked if the current situation could have an effect on whether Cardiff - which is 15th in the Premier League table, four points clear of the relegation zone - stays up or not, Mackay said: "Absolutely. You cannot have your dirty linen washed in public every week of the year without it affecting the club.
"I am not saying it immediately effects the players as that's my job to protect them.
"They are a great group of people that focus entirely on themselves, their profession and their want to stay in this league.
"My main focus is a steely determination that I and my staff make sure that everything is done to protect them and make sure that we have got the best chance we have of staying in this league.
"But, as I've said before, I feel sorry for our fans. They have been dragged through the front pages of newspapers instead of back pages and they should be really, really enjoying this league this year.
"I would hope at some point soon common sense will prevail."
Mackay, Dalman and Tan have yet to meet for critical talks, with the manager claiming his request to hold discussions have twice been rejected and that there is unlikely to be any dialogue until the end of the week.
