Cardiff City star Craig Conway relishing rebirth after withdrawing transfer request

Dec 24th 2012

REBORN winger Craig Conway insisted his unhappiness at Cardiff City was a thing of the past.

“I’m happy now, I’m playing and you’ve always got to believe in your own ability.

“I’ve come in and done well, but it’s more important that we’ve done well as a team.”

Conway slapped in a transfer request last month after becoming disillusioned with his lack of first-team opportunities.

But since then Conway has broken back into Malky Mackay’s team after his fellow Scot insisted he was part of his plans and would not be going anywhere in the January transfer window.

Conway scored the winner against Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month and he again played a crucial role at Leicester, setting up Craig Bellamy’s first-half decider before heading off the line in the final quarter.

“I’ve spoken about it before, every player wants to play and again that was the only way it happened,” said Conway, explaining the transfer request.

“That was the way I felt at the time because I wasn’t playing.

“But, as far as I’m concerned, that’s finished now. I spoke to the manager about it and, without going into it, that’s it.

“I’m happy now, I’m playing and you’ve always got to believe in your own ability.

“I’ve come in and done well, but it’s more important that we’ve done well as a team.”

Cardiff can celebrate the festivities with a three-point lead at the top of the Championship tree, Hull now their nearest challengers after Crystal Palace were held 1-1 at home by Huddersfield on Saturday evening.

Palace will aim to cut the gap in the Welsh capital on Boxing Day, but Conway said confidence in the Cardiff camp is running high.

“Everyone gets on with each other here and it’s always good to be top of the table,” he said.

“But we’ll follow that old cliche of taking one game at a time and hope to have a great Christmas.

“We’ve got two home games now but we’ll be thinking no further than Palace. That’s a massive game.”

and hopefully we can get our home form going again.

“We lost at Palace when we gave away a two-goal lead earlier in the season and we want to put that right in front of our home fans.

“Hopefully we’ll put that result to bed on Boxing Day.

“We threw away three points there but there’s been times this season when we’ve been under pressure and come away with the three points.”

Mackay’s men had to withstand an early assault from Leicester before Bellamy’s goal turned the tide, Cardiff often the more likely to score after the break.

“I wouldn’t say we were comfortable in the second half but I thought we played well and could have scored more,” said Conway.

“I’m not really known for heading it off the line but that’s my job to be on the post, and I was obviously in the right place at the right time.

“We knew they would put us under early pressure but Marsh (goalkeeper David Marshall) has done it all year to be fair.

“He saved us a few times, as did the bar, but I felt after that we did well and created a few chances.

“We scored in that time and it was a great finish by Craig.

“Everyone knows what a top player he is, he sets high standards in training and that’s what he’s all about.

“A lot of players who have played at the top level don’t want to work hard.

“But he puts a shift in, works the line well and closes down defenders and, obviously, his pace is a massive asset for us.”

The best signing in the history of Cardiff City, the guy is not everyones cup of tea but Bellamy is a winner, doesn't take shit and expects his fellow professionals to be of the same mind. I read Phil Dwyer's book the other day and what is obvious is that the less talented pro's really do look up to the top guys when they have the same attitude. If they give it the billy big bollocks then it all falls apart. A team game, everyone works for each other, simples.

The Blues are going up, albeit in Red, but if I can make the game that sends us up I'll dig out one of the few football shirts I have, the unsponsored one from a couple of years ago and try to my best to get there. :ayatollah:

Im happy Conway is now happy, just shows what a great guy MM is to work under and its nice to see players change their mind and I hope he can focus now always liked Conway.

I read in Muambas book about Bellamy.. he was saying about our players get theirselfs into a game and he said Bellamy is a angry fella and gets hiself really pumped up and thats how he gets the best out of hiself etc. He said the stuff Bellamy says to refs is unreal. :ayatollah:

Maybe it's just me but I don't like this sort of attitude from Conway. Players can't throw their toys out of the pram demanding transfers just because they are on the bench. He plays a couple of games and then everything is rosy. What happens the next time he is benched? Will another transfer request go in?

You're right mate. But whatever was said in Malky's office obviously worked.
Brilliant bit of man management. Now we will have Craig Noone chomping
at the bit to get on that pitch too. Nothing more destructive on a football
pitch than a fired up winger! :ayatollah:

He got his opportunity through the miss fortune of Tommy Smith. Other players that are currently warming the bench take note... Be patient and take your opportunity when it's handed it to you. A good squad will take us up not a good starting eleven.

He proved his point.. not a winger with the blistering pace but he got fantastic delivery.
