Malky January targets include a striker and a left back

Fri Dec 21, 2012 5:05 am

Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay has put a left-back and a striker at the top of his wish-list for the January transfer window, as the Bluebirds look to cement their position as Championship pace-setters.

The Bluebirds face a tough trip to Leicester on Saturday on the back of their surprise 2-1 defeat tp Peterborough last weekend, a reverse that ended their record-breaking 10-match winning run at home.

But while the busy Christmas schedule is Mackay’s immediate priority, he wants a defender, possibly a left-back, to challenge Andrew Taylor, and a striker who may well cost a fee.

Fraizer Campbell at Sunderland and Bolton’s Marvin Sordell both fit the bill, while Aston Villa’s out-of-favour former England forward

Darren Bent could yet be the target of a cheeky loan bid.

Cardiff have been linked, mainly on internet sites, with loan moves for a number of big-name players including Ryan Giggs, Michael Owen and Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who is said to be taking his coaching badges in Wales.

But there is no substance in any of those rumours.

Some bookmakers are turning away bets on Giggs joining his home city club in the short-term, but there is no chance the Wales international will be joining Cardiff’s promotion chase.

Mackay does, though, want to add to his squad and has money available if needed, but he also knows it’s a tough market

in January.

A quality experienced goalscorer to add something different to what Heidar Heidar Helguson, who has netted eight goals, has offered will definitely be sought with Nicky Maynard, signed from West Ham United for £2.75m last summer, ruled out until next season.

Do we ever believe what the echo says.

According to Carl "MALKY" was after 4 out of a list of 17 he had...I think it was CARL...Correct me if I am wrong

Then the other day it was Malky wants three in...was that Annis?..Im not sure!

Now we are hearing from the echo its a left back and a striker

Personally i think we need two strikers and two full backs

For a promotion chasing side we need someone a bit more prolific up front ..this boy WOOD looks the part

Brayford seems to hold our interest according to the midlands papers

It will be interesting to see what eventually happens

We ain't doing bad without our marquee forward this season. Second best scoring team and only just behind Palace and still without our big summer Striker. As much as a big name striker would excite me in Jan. Full back is deft our weak point and needs to be addressed.

This 'prolific striker' bollocks is getting beyond. We have scored more goals than
anyone. More than all the clubs with 'prolific strikers'

A new one would boost our bid for promotion admittedly, of course it would.

But we have scored an average of almost exactly two goals a game :D

Where we have fallen flat on our arses, and the reason we are not running away
with this league is that we have conceded an average of two goals every
game away from home.

Tighten up at the back with a new face or two and we'll go up anyway!! :ayatollah:

A lot of that story seems to have been lifted straight from this messageboard, some points I have read on here this week

I do think we need a striker. The thing is Earnshaw will be going and we will need someone imo.

I think along the same lines but plenty of players have struggled after choosing the wrong clubs then made a comeback.
