Diesel car or Petrol car?

I've recently started doing my driving lessons, done ten hours now! Anyway I am learning in a diesel car, I was just wondering what is the actual difference between driving a diesel car and a petrol car? :?

If yor doing a lot of mileage each day, works van, things like that, then that's when diesels come into there own, more economical. If yor just running about town, joy riding etc then there's not much difference, so I'd go with a petrol engine. Think petrol engines are cheaper for parts, but diesel engines last longer. if yor going for a newish car, then you won't have to worry about that so much

Diesels cheaper to service, get better mpg and engine last longer. Clutch is heavier though and car obviously noisier, diesel currently 7p a litre more than petrol.
Depends how long you want to keep the car and how many miles you would do.
My 40 litre tank gets me between 4-500 miles, petrol your looking at 250-350.

speaking as a former instructor, most schools use diesel cars as they do high mileage and diesels are more economical to run. Diesel cars are also easier to learn in. For example, when you do a manoeuvre (parallel park, turn in the road, bay park, reverse round a corner) in a diesel you can use only the clutch peddle to control the car. Petrol cars would normally need clutch and gas. There are factors which can change this however, like doing it on an incline or high camber. Then you'll need a little gas to help you.

Once you have passed, you're probably not do as many miles so I would personally go for a petrol engine. With low miles they are just as economical to run. I'm estimating that your first car won't be that powerful,so would mean that a petrol engine would probably be more fun to drive as the engines are normally more responsive when accelerating.

Diesel cars are generally more expensive than petrol, diesel itself is more expensive, but the road tax (CO2 emissions) is cheaper.

So in a nutshell... high miles = diesel. Low or average miles = petrol.

Petrol all the way, theres to much lag on diesel engines and their way to noisy for me.

it like the poster before said as it will be your first car insurance will hit you hard so get a nice 1.2 petrol. perfect for you to gain experience

Just bought an 08 Ford Focus :?

Filled the petrol tank for £67 and it showed 680km available.

Pretty damn reasonable I thought

I've had many of both.

Petrol is better to drive but diesel is cheaper by far.

Petrol gives you gradual power when you put your foot down, diesels tend to have a delay then all the power at once.

I say with fuel prices so high go with diesel.
