QUESTION FOR THE OVER 40`S

Wed Dec 12, 2012 8:06 pm

what is your favourite football decade ..... mine will always be the late 70s .... i dont know whether its because it was all new to me but that decade seem to have more glitz about it with maverick footballers, tough footballs, great football kits, great football chants and muddy pitches ............. watching cardiff in those days seemed so much better than anything ive witnessed since ........... but even away from cardiff you had the likes of keegan, dalglish, channon, osgood, jennings, gemmil, greenoff, buchan, hoddle, ardiles, georgie best, stan bowles, gordon hill etc etc plying their trade ..... bloody great days!

Football was massive early 80s imo. it was everything, if your were not watching it, you were playing it.
I think the top footballers were less arrogant in them days. the F.A cup was amazing where now its lost its shine.

Football was on normal t.v more often as well, but then again there was only 3 channels

Early seventies, for years I only went to mid week games as I played football on a Saturday afternoon, then I had a bad ankle break and it took two years to get right, so I was a season ticket holder in the Canton Stand for two seasons and used to go away when I could afford it as well, enjoyed the football then, still enjoy it now mind. :ayatollah:

Mine were the 80's, just loved the Casual Scene at Football and our away Support in 82/83 was superb. The 70's we were to scruffy

Late 70's for me too, our mini cup run beating Spurs & Wrexham before going down to a Duncan Mackenzie inspired Everton. Being allowed to go unaccompanied as a teenager was awesome in my major domos. great days

My favourite chant then was ......"you're going in the Taff, you're going in the Taff, you're going in, you're going in the Taff!" :ayatollah: :old: :ayatollah:

Late 70's and 80's for me. While I think about it, football probably took a turn for the worse when the first sponsors started appeared on shirts. Was that the very start of modern football?

The fa cup build up started 8am in the early 80s
They would meet the players wives go to the factory where the match balls were made then go to the two teams hotels for updates etc.
Then show fans leaving for the journey to wembley then the players leaving the hotels and when they arrive..
These days it starts 30mins before kick off :(

I'd go with the late seventies. That cup run was special against Spurs, Wrexham and Everton. Spurs had Ralph Coates playing for them.....the comb over king, why oh why do we not see that hair style anymore I wonder? We had the dynamic duo of Evans and Alston up front. I have to admit that somewhere I still have the newspaper cuttings. There was also something otherworldy about why 30,000 people would turn up at the Baseball Ground and Maine Road to see top flight games being played on pitches that resembled the Somme.
I think now is pretty special for Cardiff City (even with the jaundiced eye of a forty something) and that is because of the very real feeling that I am watching a true team not a collection of egos. I would love it if promotion happened. However, I would hope that getting bigger would not also mean we lose what is currently something special.

Ah memories - yes the 70s were indeed the time to be a young football fan. Why are there no mavericks or comb overs any more - coached or combed out of them I guess. Players were less like athletes, more like drinkers who happened to turn out on a Saturday afternoon, kits were stylish, yellow and cards and sponsors non existant and the FA Cup had a real air of romance about it. Crowds were much more vocal and the chants were better - terraces I guess. Really miss the European nights too - saw some quality sides in Cup Winners Cup.

Saying all that - in recent times I have loved our Wembley appearances, pitch invasion after CC Semi last year and despite everything thats happened off the pitch, I think the football this season is the best I have seen us play since that era.
