A forum for all things Cardiff City

This is a serious question that I would really like to read your comments about.
But spare me the Anti-Swans nonsense
Can you remember when you first realised that you were a City fan?
Was it a particular visit to Ninian? A particular game? Family/ friend association?
For me, I used to go with my dad, we would also see all the Wales games (gluttens for punishment!). this is in the mid-1970s...loved it.
But I would love to read your thoughts.

My dad took me to a game and I was hooked from there on.

My brother used to go to the games in Ninian Park and he took me once for the last game of the season of 2004/2005 against Qpr we won 1-0 with a McAnuff goal. I remember just getting there that I wanted to go again.. game after game you just love the club and want to be part of it. Its quite social as you manage to meet new people.
Being young I wasn't allowed to go to many games, basically kept update every season until the last season at Ninian Park where my Mother found time to take me to a game and fairplay it was quite mad to see her bouncing after McCormacks penalty vs Watford in 2008/2009. Great memory with my Mam and Brother, always remember that.

Never entered my head to suport anybody else to be honest.
Neither parent was a fan, so no pressure from them.
when i first got into football at the age of 8. CITY were in a simailar position to now.(knocking on the door of promotion to top tier).
first match the Real Madrid game but it was the mid seventies when I got hooked.
Lived in Kent for a while and used to watch Gillingham, but without any emotion attached.
Local Team for me the City 40 years plus now
All together now

For me personally no other reason other than I was born in Cardiff so its my home city.
I grew up outside Cardiff though and majority of kids at that time were West Ham/Forest due to european cup exploits and Wolves were popular Swansea of course riding high in Prem in early 80's however I would always look out for Cardiff results and tune in to my old mans radio to listen to the scores coming in. Football manager in 1981 I always picked Cardiff and then as I got older starting going down on the train.

Followed from old div 4 1988. Addicted straight away, i was 16. Loved everything about it including some of the football played on the field.
Loved away games more than home and loved that it was Cardiff on the football world stage when we done well. went with a good bunch of lad lads that were in it for more than just the football.

Local team which makes me proud to support those who represent the area I was born in
The togetherness of the fans in the Ninian Park days and the atmosphere
It was a place to go to unwind and just feel a part of something rather than just being bored hanging around in the street with sod all to do because of the neighborhood watch moaning brigade
If anything, it was more the fans why I got hooked than anything.
Nowadays, due to the divide in our fan base I would say its more the up and down rollercoaster of being a Cardiff fan. We all hate it when we fail at something but to get there in the first place is one hell of a journey. The unpredictability with this football club is amazing. Who would have thought we would have taken Liverpool to penalties and then people of other fans actually getting behind us to beat them, the underdogs beat 5 time European champions. We went on to lose but when Turner scored the equaliser the euphoria was outstanding.

I was 5, my dad took me to NP to watch City v Brighton, March 1978, 1-0 win, Buchanan screamer.
Loved everything about the game, before during n after. By the end of that season I was a "fan", went down in the summer to watch the players train, Harry Parsons offered me the job of being a ballboy, how could I say no, did that for 7 seasons.
Loved every second of it.

Didn't miss a home game till I moved away in 86,

Mine is totally different being from the States. After watching the World Cup a few years back I realized I enjoyed the sport. I started paying attention to the Premeire League and wanted to settle on a team, but could not find one that inspired me to really jump on board.
When I was a kid growing up we had to do reports on various countries for school and I was assigned Wales. Ever since then I have been partial to your country. So I started looking into the Cardiff traditions, history, and fans. After that it was an easy choice. I am still a novice but I have loved every minute of the last 2 plus seasons.

My first visit was courtesy of either the club or council who gave all the Cardiff junior school football teams complimentary tickets.Stoke were the visitors and in their team would be Stanley Matthews, probably the best footballer of his time and as he was now 43 or 44 it was felt it would be his last appearance at Ninian Park
I'm not certain whether this was he game on 25th Oct 1958 (2-2) or 21st Nov 1959 (4-4) but I do know that Matthews did not play that day but I did see him some years later as he kept playing until his late 40's.
From that moment I wanted to go to every game and whenever my Dad could afford it I went. I was there when Graham Moore scored the winner against Aston Villa to secure our promotion to the First division. the following season I watched as City beat the Spurs double winning team 3-2, one of only 6 games they lost that season. Although we were relegated after 2 seasons the many European nights and the team of the late sixties which almost secured promotion again kept my passion alive.
I do admit that during the 18 years of yo-yoing between the lower leagues my enthusiasm did wane and with a young family and a mortgage I had the excuse of not going as often as I would have liked and was not one of the 2500 who did go. ( I think if everyone who claims to have been there at this time are telling the truth then our gates were more like 25000)
Anyway these are my memories and they can never be taken away from me regardless of what colour we play in, but I'm eager to add more so Come on City finish the job get promoted and you can inspire a new generation of supporters.

I'm from Bridgend and only ever really watched football on MOTD as a kid. Cardiff were never on TV back then and my folks weren't in to football so no one ever took me to a game - I didnt get to see much football apart from United/ Arsenal highlights (our under 8s team used to visit NP and the Vetch to watch games but I cant really remember any of it). I then went to uni in Cardiff and a few lads and I fancied going to watch a game in NP, so one day we just walked up and got tickets on the gate and stood in the Grange End.
Hooked ever since.

I believe in Supporting your local club and the place where you were born.
I also fell in love with Cardiff due to our once passionate/fanatical support we had. I saw at Blackburn away the other night for the first time this season, some of that passion return.

1969/70 was the year I really started, Toshack went to Liverpool, all doom and gloom but Warboys came and Clarkie was still there so business as usual ( came 3rd and missed out ) followed the boys throughout the seventies, however I played a bit myself and only was able to see a few games each year. Packed in playing and lost interest in football in general. But glad to say for the last 10 years I have been back.

It's the nearest professional football league club to where I live, pretty simple really.
Tue Dec 11, 2012 6:25 pm
I only lived in Cardiff from 1982 until 89 but my mums family were from S Wales and my Grandad and great Uncle were original Port Talbot Bluebirds who had moved to Barry in the 20s. My dads side of the family were from west and North wales and they also followed Cardiff. I saw my 1st CCFC league game in February 1981 whilst on half term holiday staying with my grandparents. Loved the city ever since despite years of being an exile.
My kids are all totally screwed up. Can never understand parents who let their kid support Man U or Scousers? That moment when I lifted my 2 older boys high in the air after Ben Turner's equaliser at Wembley was one of the greatest feelings ever. Had i been a plastic in the other end the victory feelings would not have felt real.

Because they changed there kit to red.

Because I felt proud to support my local team even thought we were awful. Proud to stand out amongst the glory hunters. Can't tell the difference nowadays

Tue Dec 11, 2012 7:58 pm
well for me. my parents worked on a saturday. and my uncle was a steward down the city. so i had to go with him.think it was 1976 or 78. we beat peterbrough. 6-2, and i was in the canton end with my cousin. the old wooden benches. not watching the game just playing. running up and down the benches. i used to go each week then. and i just got in to it,

My father took me down in 1958, I loved it and Cardiff has been my club ever since.
Tue Dec 11, 2012 10:00 pm
My dad was the main reason. Took me and my 4 brothers and to this day we still have 4 season tickets together (my personal debut 69/70 beat QPR 4-2 with a hat trick by a certain Mr Toshack). Dad was born in 1927 so I guess it was meant to be. He was a bluebird till he died. Had a big decision to make at 15 as I was seriously into playing and our age group were going to play Saturday afternoon. Missed 1 home game and realised it had to be the City and pub football on a Sunday instead. Probably missed about 15 home games over the last 30 years or so and couldn't imagine not being there. Over the years the good times (even when we were crap) are too numerous to mention and have had so many laughs along the way with so many good people. You have to be a fan to properly understand our fans. I really hope we retain that togetherness that is more evident when we go away
