What Is The Point Of The Welsh language?

Mon Dec 03, 2012 10:10 pm

All that money wasted on bilingual signs etc for an ancient language that not many people speak!

With the global market now a way of life don't you think that it's about time we all learned to speak a prominent language?

Instead of learning welsh, shouldn't we teach our children to learn say, chinese, spanish and english?

Surely that would benefit them better than some old gobbedly gook from ancient times?

We have to let go of this romantic bullshit of heritage and living in the past and teach our children for the future.

The welsh language is more of a click than anything else.

I speak welsh and am proud to be able to.

The Welsh language is generally a positive thing for Wales however it no way warrants the investment it gets, the government have way overestimated the benefits of the language to our society. I can speak the language to a degree and I am all for it being taught in our schools to children that WANT to be taught the language. They force it on every child at the moment.

Welsh speakers in my eyes view it as a club and use it to say they are more Welsh than everyone. Most Welsh speakers are bitter for some reason. It's a clique that I do not want to be part of at the moment, attitudes must change before the whole country adopts the language.

You can do everything can't you. Maybe you can introduce yourself to Annis in Welsh.

people may learn it but its hardly gonna become the first language of ely.
Id say more people in cardiff speak somali than welsh.
and if people do leasrn it what they gonna do with it...nothing thats what.
its like latin in so much they dont have enough vocabulary to express themselves properly in the modern day

people struggle to learn Welsh, you can forget about them learning how to write and speak Chinese! and anyway, schools already teach spanish, french, german and italian! i know, i've been taught them all through school and really they're more pointless than Welsh!... i'd love to be able to speak fluent Welsh, my girlfriends family speak it to each other! they use it all the time cos it gives them a connection to each other, and tbh if i had a choice i would of gone to a Welsh school when i was a kid!

so yeah, not pointless, it's apart of our heritage and people like to have the ability to speak it and feel proud of it!

Actually the language has grown most in Cardiff than it has anywhere else in Wales however you are right. The somalians can't be bothered to learn English let alone Welsh which is a much harder language to grasp.

the point of learning another language is to be able to communicate clearly with more people,

The welsh percentage of the planets population is very small, get my drift?

Its OUR language, a language that we fought hard to keep alive. Its because of people like you that the language started to die, but its on the rise now and it would be brilliant if the majority of Welsh people spoke their own language. How any Welshman would want to scrap it is beyond me.

I have nothing against the welsh language and I think its great its on the rise. I'm playing to learn it at some point when I have more time and less important things to worry about. My grip is with the amount of investment being wasted on it and the overall bias from the Welsh Goverment. The other fact as well is alot of jobs in Wales are stating that speaking Welsh is an advantage when applying for jobs which already puts non-welsh speakers at a disadvantage.

My daughter and nieces go to a welsh speaking school and all speak welsh as well as english, and I for one am very proud that they speak there native tongue. As the saying goes "a country without a language is a country without a soul" we have fought to keep our welsh identity and language for centuries. Its something to be very proud of that it still exists and is now making a comeback

I was born with Welsh, and we speak it in the family, but don't make a song and dance about it. Glad that the language seems to be holding its own. It is one of the two indidgenous languages in Wales. Not like Somali, Urdu, Italian, or whatever. In favour of bi-lingual road signs etc., but the main waste goes on translating documents in the National Assembly, forms that hardly anybody (including fluent Welsh speakers) use. Am also uneasy about some (mainly public sector) jobs needing Welsh. S4C gets far too much money, and the quality of the programmes is poor. Basically, they imitate popular English programmes, and translate them.

Having said all that, I still believe that it is right to teach it in schools, up to 16. Other languages are also taught. Children do have a choice at a certain stage. By the way, Welsh does have a modern vocabulary, so comparing it to Latin is a little bit unfair!

Some of the Welsh speakers are cliquy, but then so are plenty of other groups. The ones who come to Cardiff are probably unrepresentative of Welsh speakers across the rest of Wales.

It will be interesting to see what figures the 2011 census give us.

I'm curently learning New Testament Greek! Great fun!

Like I said, it's great fun  Agree about having one main world language. We already do, and luckily for us that is English, because of the US.
