Freddie Flintoff: From Lords to the Ring

Wed Nov 28, 2012 3:10 pm

Anyone else been watching this..?

Going back around ten years ago there was a similar thing in Australia with a Rugby League player taking up Boxing but never heard of him since. His first fight is on friday night.

If the guy he's fighting is a bum he should get knocked out. Unless somehow he is a natural talented boxer.

I've seen a bit of this Dawson lad that Flintoff is fighting and he's not the most 'active' you'll ever see in the ring. Freddie, for all his obvious flaws, due to NO experience will be very busy and that itself will be in his favour.

I've had it on good authority that Flintoff is looking the part and has no intentions of being made a fool of. Also when you consider that even though Dawson has 2 wins from his 2 fights, they will have taken a lot of time to pick this opponent, i think the 11/10 odds on Flintoff winning is a great bet.

Its only a 4 rounder to so if Dawson does step it up a bit then the 10/1 on the draw seems fantastic value because i cant see him leaving Manchester with a win unless its by KO!

Flintoff was 6/4 to win but has come in considerably since then so someone, somewhere fancies him to win and is backing it £££!

Its growing on me put it that way! When the odds were released i thought betting on Dawson at evens was literally like free money! But the more i've enquired and asked about.....the more i'm going with Freddie! :ayatollah:

The one thing i cant get my head around is, the promotor/match maker would NOT bring Dawson over if they didnt think he was plenty beatable!

I might have a few quid on it, nothing special just to keep it interesting.

freddy has got into a great shape for this fight. been really disciplined considering his previous lifestyle..

good luck to him...

I like Freddie, and hes taking it very serious, certainly not just a publicity stunt but its a farce.

Mcguigans were telling their guys to take it easy in sparring then end of last episode the shackles come off and Freddie got slapped silly.

Hope he doesnt get hurt.

On another note Freddies bird is top of the range.

You cant box for 4 months....

and go in with someone whos been fighting and training for years its obviously fixed,

they will tell the kid if you start opening him up make sure you dont hurt him

due to safety concerns given the gamble flintoff has taken

I've seen white collar lads come in do charity events, Cardiff rugby players, weight lifters, real athletes,

train for 6 months. and its looked like strictly come dancing on the night,
he will get opened up if thekid is serious, he'l leave his head up wen he's tired and expose himself to big shots, nose popped by round 3...

Boxing is not a sport you can just pick up in a few months training, he's got no amateur experience any dedicated pro should batter him.. And what happens then.?? He goner keep fighting.?? The whole thing looks like farce to me.. :ayatollah:

Thats the part that i'm unsure about. Dawson isnt anything special, but technically you shouldnt need to be to beat someone with NO boxing experience.

My only doubt about the whole thing is that they had the choice of the vast majority of heavyweights to pick as Flintoffs opponent (within reason obviously) and they chose this guy....theres gotta be a reason for it.

However, as a pro boxer (ie this is his job!) Dawson aint gonna want to come over here and get beaten by a part timer. Theres so many things that sway me either way.

I can literally see it now...... by about 10pm tomorrow i'll be sat there thinking 'why on earth did i ever think Flintoff could beat an actual boxer'!! :ayatollah:

all boxers have to start somewhere. Doesnt mean he wont be any good.

of course, he could be awful as well, will find out soon.

He's simply doing it out of boredom. He's had to retire early from cricket.
Since then he's done all manner of challenging things to keep himself occupied.
If you'd been a professional sportsman and had your career cut short and someone said train with me I'll make you into a boxer most of us would have a bash.
He's a top bloke and for him it probably beats watching Mr Tumble.

How long did it take the footballer Curtis Woodhouse to start performing to a decent level in boxing after retiring from football? The fact the fight is only 4 rounds shows that they will just want Freddie to keep it tight and try to hold off for a points decision. For a first fight I reckon he'd take a points defeat and it leaves it open for a second series then. Classic documentary manipulation.

Lets hope hes better at boxing than he is at acting (Jacamo advert)

This is going to be embarrassing for Flintoff. Dawson is no dummy. He'll have no respect for Flintoff and either knock him out in the first 30 seconds or show him how hurtful body shots can be. Either way it won't go the distance unless Flintoff can outrun him!

Its a tough old game. I had 25 pro fights and had to quit coz my record was not up to scratch.i drew one lost one and chickened out of 23.

I think you might be referring to Anthony Mundine who is still boxing and hasn't done too badly.

Sonny Bill Williams who is a current All Black has had professional fights too.

If Freddie wins Dawson may as well quit now because he obviously is rubbish.
