My wife's cousin dai webley played striker for them. I also worked with him at the time in a foundry. Amazing that they were part timers playing the likes of them.

Dai webley signed for St Albans if i remember correctly was one of the most prolific strikers in the Southern League.

I was there for the Atalanta game, I was working for Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council who owned the ground at the time and designed the new floodlighting and electrical distribution for that match, liaising with the chairman John Reddy , which was done on a very tight budget back then, so it wasn't the best installation for the televised evening match, but with some infill lighting on the night did enough to bring it up to European standards.

Dai Webley was a goal machine.

Ceri "Georgie' Williams was my favourite player back then.

Remember BBC coming down the foundry to interview dai before welsh cup final against Newport. He told them not until we had finished our five a side game in the car park. Don't think the reporter could believe. there was dai being kicked and kicking us days before cup final with hob nail boots on. How times have changed

You don't remember correctly because Dai Webley never played for St.Albans and his goalscoring ability was mainly at Merthyr as injuries cost him a chance to transfer to the Jacks.

His record for Merthyr is as follows:
1987/88 = 35 (League 30 - FA Cup 1 - Welsh Cup - 2 and another 2 in the friendly against Malta)
1988/89 = 58 goals (League 33 - League Cup 5 - FA Cup 6 - FA Trophy 4 - Welsh Cup 1)
1989/90 = 26 goals (League 17 - FA Cup 2 - Welsh Cup 1 - S Wales Cup 5 - SL Championship Match 1)
1990/91 = 17 goals (League 9 - FA Cup 2 - Welsh Cup 4 - S Wales Senior Cup 2)
1991/92 = 22 goals (League 20 - Welsh Cup 1 - S Wales Senior Cup 1)
1992/93 = 8 goals (League 5 - League Cup 1 - FA Cup 1)
1994/95 = 13 goals (League 12 - FA Trophy 1 there was also a goal in the match against Enfield which was abandoned after 81 minutes and therefore doesn't count)

i was at the atalanta game too .... fantastic night! ..... dai webley was fantastic but my favourite during those glory years was a player called ian thompson ... him and webley were brilliant together .... webley had some great partners at merthyr though with latchford, phil green and thompson ... but merthyrs success to me was down to the 2 wingers who could swap sides at will .... paul giles and ceri williams and a fantastic central midfield player called kevin rogers .... GREAT DAYS! :ayatollah:

The golden years 87-90 for me when they won the welsh cup, played in europe and got 2 promotions to the conference.

Used to have 2000-2500 there regular, its a shame all the money men in the town were rugby fans as an injection of money at that point could have seen the town having league football.
