Cardiff City FC - Kings of Europe!

Fri Nov 16, 2012 5:11 am

CARDIFF City are the kings of Europe when it comes to making their home a castle – and beating Boro will make it official.

Currently not a single team across the continent’s top leagues can better the Bluebirds’ flawless form on their own patch. And that includes the giants of the game whose citadels can be considered the most intimidating and impenetrable on the planet.

Cardiff have already made it eight from eight in the Championship so far.

And that 100% record is better than Barcelona at the Nou Camp, Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena and both Inter and AC Milan at the San Siro.

There’s a few who come close, like the Netherlands’ PSV who have seven from their seven at the Philips Stadion, a record matched by Partizan Belgrade of Serbia and Levksi Sofia of Bulgaria.

And there are a trio of teams who can claim to the same kind of home comforts as Cardiff with eight out of eight on their own patch: Romanian giants Steaua Bucuresti, Dnipro of Ukraine and compatriots – not to mention Chelsea’s Champions League conquerors – Shaktar Donetsk.

But not a single team across more than 50 divisions analysed by the Echo can say they have delivered better form at their own grounds.

There are teams whose seasons have finished that have already more home wins in the bag than the Bluebirds.

And it remains to be seen whether Cardiff’s win percentage remains anywhere near the incredible levels set in this opening third of the Championship campaign.

But victory over Middlesbrough in tomorrow’s intriguing top-of-the-table clash will equal the best overall victorious home streak set by Norway’s Brann when they won nine on the trot in their 15-game season.

A word of warning to Malky Mackay’s men comes with the fact that it wasn’t enough to secure the title as former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer guided Molde to success.

But while much has been made of Cardiff’s contrasting home and away form, having already lost five on their travels, the record is not as stark as that of Azerbaijan outfit FC Neftchi who have won five out of five at home but lost four out of four away from Baku.

The relative strengths of the different divisions cannot be ignored, of course; it’s one thing seeing off Burnley and Blackpool and another beating Borussia Dortmund and Betis.

Neither can the varying amount of games played across the continent be dismissed, the statistics slightly skewed as a result.

But the numbers do underline the incredible achievement of making Cardiff City Stadium a fortress from which an attack on promotion could be made.

And when you consider not even the most dominant teams in Europe can keep perfect domestic league records then it shows the base Mackay’s side have.

Not even the prospect of heading into the conflict-ridden Russian republic of Dagestan to take on mega-spending Anzhi Makhachkala has stopped teams taking points from Samuel Eto’o and Co.

And then there’s the big guns like Barca and the Special One’s Madrid, Real having drawn in Catalonia and Valencia holding Jose Mourinho’s men on the opening La Liga weekend.

Fiorentina lead the way ahead of the Milan clubs and Juventus in Italy’s Serie A with five wins and two draws from the seven fixtures there.

While in Celtic, the fortress that is Parkhead was overcome by surprise leaders Hibs.

Galatasaray’s ‘Welcome to Hell’ signs at the new Ali Sami Yen has led them to only four wins from five while Arsenal’s point at the Etihad Stadium stopped Premier League champions Manchester City making it six from six at the ground they have not lost a league game at since December 2010.

Bayern Munich did lay claim to one of the best home records in Europe but have lost one of their opening six in a 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

In fact, there are only 18 teams – including Cardiff – who have that 100% home score from more than four games across the divisions we assessed.

They include the aforemntioned PSV, Atletico Madrid of La Liga (6/6), FC Porto (5/5) and the rebuilding Rangers (5/5) in the basement of Scottish league football.

It is Scotland where you find the best home form of the past six games where Partick Thistle have won all and scored 24 goals in the process, conceding just three, PSV just behind having shipped one more.

But Cardiff still hold their own in the best overall home records of the current campaigns, Asteras Tripolis of the Greek Super League leading the way averaging 2.5 goals for and 0.3 against in their 100% form.

Cardiff, for the record, are fourth behind Atleti and Belenenses of Portugal’s second tier with 2.4 goals for and 0.7 against per game.

There will be some way to go to better the best unbeaten stretch of the current campaign, an honour held by Sweden’s Elfsborg Allsvenskan who went through their 30 game season undefeated at home, winning 12 and drawing three.

And it’ll take even longer for Cardiff to come close to the true untouchable teams at home, Shaktar having not lost at the stunning Donbass Arena for almost a full calendar year while Manchester City have not surrendered three Premier League points in just shy of two years – a run that stretches 35 games and counting. But the fact both are champions in their respective divisions shows how home form and finding success go hand in hand.

And while the records are all well and good – and nice for Bluebirds to brag about – beating Boro will be more important in terms of the promotion points it offers than the kudos as home kings of Europe.

Well since you asked, I post the walesonline articles most mornings, I do it for the sake of you and every other member of the board to save you having to check walesonline for yourselves for city related stories, its quite a boring task but I do it to get some relevant stories on the board in the stickies area so we can all keep up with the clubs current affairs. I assure you I take no pleasure from seeing my name next to stickies everyday, the novelty wore off a long time ago!
If you want to take over the task of copy/pasting stories from walesonline and ill sticky them on your behalf I would be very greatful!

From now on i'll take more care not to add stories that have already been added if you want to claim 'exclusivity' to a story printed in the daily paper :?
