DIY HELP

Fri Nov 16, 2012 12:05 am

We have a house which is over 300 years old. The walls are two foot thick. But two bedrooms come morning are running with water on the windows and damp on the walls by the windows. Keeping a window open at night helps but is noisy due to traffic. Now at B&Q i have seen "insulating lining paper" Or "Wall rock thermal liner paper" of which it claims to stop these problems.

Do they work ? Any advice will be helpful :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

sounds to me like condensation.Don't panic it ain damp.It always happens this time of year when the windows get shut and heating turned on.Check the tops of your windows dude and see if they have trickle vents,if so make sure they're opened. If you don't have trickle vents and most upvc windows have them, then get them installed.Cheap as chips they are, pence literally.Easy to fit too.Any problems give Paul a bell,he'll know how to fit them.

In the meantime keep mopping the water up with a towel.Worse case scenario is you'll need to get an extractor fan fitted. With those walls though your gonna need a sharp corecutter to get through

short term answer polystyrene paper to external wall then blown vinyl to all bedroom wall s, this will raise the surface temp and reduce condensation .....Long term ,fit a dry master air system or similar.............G

I have done vents and that has reduced it minimal. Havin. A de humidifier on all night works but its noisy. Some mornings there is nothing on the window and other morning it's fully confiscated up. Don't have those vents on the windows dude will look into them :ayatollah:

Re: DIY HELP

what is happening is ,when you heat the house and it cools in the night cos you have turned the heating off ,the moisture in the air tries to escape ,believe it or not it gos through brickwork but not glass thats why you get it on windows ,some houses suffer from condensation if you have had cavity wall insulation the moisture cant go through the insulation so it stays on the inner walls ,thats why they stick big vents in your walls if you have cavity wall insulation on older houses, have you blocked up a fire place or more in the house cos that will cause your problem cos the moisture no loger has an easy path to get out ,if you have ,put some vents in the chimney breasts to allow more ventilation rather than drilling through your walls to fit vents its easier, vents in you windows tend to let more of a draft through where as vent in chimney sucks air from inside to outside .

Chief the walls are solid stone two foot thick apart from the window wall which is normal brick. I have put a six inch vent in that wall but another might be needed. Or might just have to leave the window cracked open.

Fair enough ,didnt say if you have blocked up any fire places doing this causes the problem you have on older houses ,the vent you put in the wall will vent the house but only if it can draw air from somwhere else ,the air in your house needs to move to get rid of moisture ,i had exactly the same problem after blocking my fire place up ,vent in bedroom breasts and unblocked coal fire i put chimney ballon up solved it ,granted your house might be different hope this helps you in some way.
