Been to both regularly, depends when you're looking to go, some excellent places to go in Majorca.
Been to Sa Coma in East, Puerto Pollensa & Alcudia in North and very recently to Santa Ponsa in South West which is my current favourite.
Algarve done old Albufeira & new, Vilamoura & Carveiro, enjoyed all but Majorca probably has a bit more option but really depends on circumstances.

Went to both places this year. Whilst on the face of it they're both beach holidays, there are differences. Firstly I'd avoid high summer - go to Algarve in September and Mallorca in early June. Algarve has the best beaches if your staying in one spot, but I'd recco Mallorca if you hire a car. find a good 'finca'hotel in the centre of Mallorca and you can explore the beaches towns and scenery all within 50 minutes in any direction.
Algarve's best 'popular' beach is Villamoura - huge with massive waves a times.
both good holiday destinations

Both sound decent, was thinking Majorca based on it being hotter in July. I know in Prai Da Roche they had a Welsh bar with City stuff in there left from previous holiday makers.
may do Algarve again, different area.. cheers

Algarve, Carvoiero was nice but quite quiet, Vilamoura is lovely though, but as previously advised beach is not the best. Majorca wins for me, Palma is a lovely city and worth the trek up to Soller too. I stayed in Cala Bona which is great, for me Majorca wins just, but both great destinations.
