" THE FRED KEENOR STATUE "

Sat Nov 10, 2012 8:43 pm

I must say that the statue stands tall outside the stadium and it is a statue that all City fans can be very proud of.

Walking up behind the Canton Stand, the statue stands tall in the skyline.

It is very impressive and the Trust should feel very proud of it after the hard work they have put in to achieve what they did today.

I bought the miniature statue a fortnight ago and collected the commemorative brochure before the game.

Well done to everybody who put their hands in their pockets and to all the fundraisers.

I am certainly proud of the Fred Keenor statue :ayatollah:

Fred Keenor is one of the greatest legends (a correct use of that over used word) that any football club has.

Not only did he raise the FA Cup for his local team as their captain, but he also fought in the Great War (in the most iconic battle of the war, and on the most famous day of the war - 1st July 1916) 11 years before playing in the FA Cup final.

I've got many books on the Great War, and on one of them, there's a picture on the front cover of some soldiers waiting for the Battle of the Somme. I'd had the book for years and then saw a copy of the same picture in a City programme a few years ago with Fred circled. When I went home I checked the book to make sure it was definitely the same picture, and indeed, there was Fred, on the cover of a serious book about World War One, without probably even the authors realising that this was the same man who went on to lift the FA Cup as well in his lifetime.

If there was any justice in the World, they'd make a film about Fred's life, as his story is a pretty amazing one!

At least we as a club are giving proper and appropriate honour to a truly great man. :ayatollah:

Hughie Ferguson
In 1925, halfway through the season and after scoring his 285th goal for Motherwell, Ferguson departed for South Wales, joining FA Cup Finalists Cardiff City for a fee 0f £5,000, just £1,000 less than the record transfer fee at the time.[1] In the previous few seasons, Cardiff had trawled far and wide for talented players and Ferguson was one of a list of notable Scots to wear the blue shirt; Scottish internationals Jimmy Blair and Jimmy Nelson had both appeared for the club. He a goalscoring debut for the club on 7 November 1925 in a 5–2 win over Leicester City
Ferguson's most successful moment in English football occurred when he appeared for Cardiff in the 1927 Cup Final against Arsenal. Having scored five times on the way to the final, in the 74th minute, collecting a throw from the right, Ferguson hurried a tame shot toward the Arsenal goal. Dan Lewis, the Arsenal goalkeeper, appeared to collect the ball but, under pressure from the advancing Len Davies, clumsily allowed the ball to roll through his grasp; in a desperate attempt to retrieve the ball, Lewis only succeeded in knocking the ball with his elbow into his own net. Ernie Curtis, the 19 year old centre-wing said of the goal:
"I was in line with the edge of the penalty area on the right when Hughie Ferguson hit the shot which Arsenal's goalie ( had crouched down for a little early. The ball spun as it travelled towards him, having taken a slight deflection so he was now slightly out of line with it. Len Davies was following the shot in and I think Dan must have had one eye on him. The result was that he didn't
Ferguson returned to Scotland with Dundee in the following season for a fee of £500, but his days there were desperate; a despondent, demanding crowd seeking from the legendary goalscorer more than he could provide. He scored two goals for Dundee, before being dropped due to injury and a lack of form.
Ferguson sank into depression and on 9 January 1930 committed suicide, gassing himself at Dens Park after a training session. He was aged 31, and left behind his wife Jessie and two children

It is easy to forget we also had one of the greatest goalscorers in the history of British football in that great winning cup team who died very young under tragic circumstances .

I don't know that, TGI, that's tragic.

May he rest in peace.

I'm over the moon that everyone here and across the other boards seem to be happy with it! There were several things that could've gone pear shaped with it such as location, likeness, pose, size, materials, appearance etc yet it seems to be universally liked!

As we all know, it's nigh on impossible to please all City fans, but looks like Fred's statue has done just that

I think its all spot on in fairness :ayatollah:

It looks a lot better than I expected and I think the fans can be proud that we paid for it (or most of it) :ayatollah:

Great stuff and well done to everyone involved.

Probably get called pedantic for this but I can handle that but if they were going to call Arsenal, The Arsenal which they have then surely the should have had a capital T.
