A lot of people will say that it's rugby. Personally I think it's football. We have more amuture football teams in Wales than rugby, higher average total attendances and the only reason the international rugby get asana followers of because it has a lot women/children that attend events such as 6 nations and autumn internationals. And are we better at rugby than football? 32 international teams in rugby no where near how many football teams. What are your thoughts ,?

Argentina is sold out, not sure on Samoa. Regional rugby attendances are piss poor but the fact the national side sell out constantly I think makes it the national sport. How many times have we sold out the millennium the past 5 years? Once prob for England.

32 international teams, but only about 7 of them take the sport seriously.
The rest are nothing more than glorified amateurs.

yes but how many are there to watch the game take a look how many are actually looking at the big screen to wait and see if they are on it or are looking around to see when the mexican wave is going to come to them

If you measure it on participation it's footbball by a ratio of about 4:1. If you measure it on club/ region attendances it's football. The crowds basically crawl out 3 or 4 times a year for internationals. Huge numbers are only there for a piss up and aren't really interested in what they're watching. I must say I'm really looking forward to sharing a train home today with a bunch of fat drunken wankers and slappers in ill fitting rugby tops and glitter cowboy hats.

Our national sport is rugby.
Year on Year, good or bad Wales pack the Millenium stadiem for Rugby.
At Club level Football is much bigger, but national level there is only one winner.

i have this arguement with my boss in work .
facts
amount of people registered to play each sport in wales
rugby - 69,000
football -173,000
wales rugby play normally 4/5 games a year and dont sell them all out , every time they play its allways against a top team in the world (ie - france australia england new zealand ) if and when they do play poorer teams like samoa the ground is half empty .
wales football play 7/8 a year normally against poor teams like macedonia or san marino which are not sell outs in any country in the world unless it means something in the game .
if wales football played 5 games a year against brazil holland argentina germany and spain we would sell out the stadium aswell .
wales club rugby attendances are shocking the blues quite often struggled to get 7k a game as do many other teams .
football clubs are near sell outs for swansea and cardiff every game at least 20k both . there was only 7k there last night aswell whilst there will be over 20 k at the ccs today .
how many times to you walk down the street and see kids playing rugby ?
how many times do you walk down the street and see kids playing football ?
how many football pitches do you see on the cardiff parks compared to rugby pitches ?
the average price of a city ticket is £27 and £15 for kids
the average price of a blues ticket is £18 and as cheap as £8 for kids
how many rugby shirts do you see around cardiff city centre compared to football shirts ?
now i admit rugby is percieved and accepted over the years as wales national sport but times have changed and whilst wales will allways be known as a rugby country the facts are that football is massively more popular now than rugby !! FACT

CAN ANYBODY NAME A RUGBY TEAM IN WALES THAT IS NOT FROM SOUTH WALES ???? i thought to be a national sport it had to cover the whole country ??
Sat Nov 10, 2012 11:44 am
Rugby is the national sport, no contest.
I don't understand why people have such an issue with this? I don't tend to follow club rugby but hope all the regions do well and always want the national team to be successful.
Lets be honest, we have a relatively successful international rugby team who are well thought of on the international scene. Its not something to be ashamed of, unlike the shower that is the national football team.
The players show pride when playing for their country, sing the anthem and bleed red (stating the obvious....

) can we say the same for the footballers that represent us?? We've got an Englishman as captain for fucks sake.

More people play football and even more watch professional football than their rugby counterparts, but for the day trippers its rugby. Today is an occasion and although I will be at the CCS as usual I will be down the pub with my mates to watch the other Autumn series games.

The gogs are essentially scouse/mancunians so they're exempt

Rugby. Always has been rugby, always will be rugby.
My school had 4 rugby teams and not one football team. There is a greater following for international rugby, more people watch it and more people care about it than football. Yes regional rugby doesn't get great attendances, but that's besides the point. We're talking about the NATIONAL sport, and on a national level rugby is the sport of Wales.
Sat Nov 10, 2012 12:48 pm
Right I am only gonna say this once

Wales is a nation that you are told that Rugby is the only sport in Wales that counts, now many do enjoy the Rugby and do play or attend games. Now international games about 75% of those that go don't really have an interest in the game! They go so they can put on very silly hats and get pissed, they don't really care if wales win or not. Now proof in the pudding Wales could be loosing to England heavily and the Camera would pan on the crowd and everyone will start dancing around like Jimmy Savile in a crèche. Now change that to football and the looks on there faces tell the whole story !! It means everything to them and they look gutted.
Rugby international days are just a Day out for most who don't even know the rules on Rugby.
Your Welcome !!

thats not really the point tho isit? i reckon wales could most prob sell out another 30 thousand seats at the millenium if we had that many when we play the likes of ireland, england or new zealand

More of a day out for Rugby fans, they're not treated like animals, they're allowed to have a drink in their hand watching the game, they allow persistent standing, they aren't bullied by stewards. The WRU are a better organised organisation than the FAW. In P.E lessons, children are made to play more rugby, football is always overlooked and seen as a better option, I was a student at Whitchurch High School, Sam Warburton was always mentioned in lessons as someone to look up to as inspiration, yet the school also produced one of the best left sided midfielders in the Premiership at this moment in time yet he's rarely mentioned. It's an absolute joke.

Don't forget, all the local businesses get behind the Welsh national Rugby team but not once is there support for the Welsh national football team.

Absolute rubbish! Nobody watches rugby apart from internationals and even then the stadium is full of people who have no idea of the rules, are up and down to the bar and follow the game on the big screen because you can't follow the game live as it's too far away!! Rugby is just a piss up not a supporter sport.

Pretty ignorant post. Same as me saying that watching Cardiff is just for kids and families because there's lots of them there.

People getting confused here by the words national and international.
Finlands national sport is handball and ice hockey yet the football gets more spectators. Lithuanias national sport is basketball, the same applies football gets higher attendances.
Depends what your definition of national sport is I guess.
