why????
It's against ground rules to stand, so surely they should be ejected if they persist - that would soon sort them out!
Sadly, it's probably just idle threats.

Why would the stewards risk getting thumped ? I know if I was a steward and my boss said go in amongst that lot and start ejecting them for standing up ,I'd say f**k that !

What clubs should do is have a zero tolerance approach, and ban people who persist mercilessly - but as with most things in this country, it's all just words and there will be no action to back it up.

every man and his dog knows that persistent standing is not tolerated at football matches, laid out by ground regulations written by the FA and the football ground safety advisory group. Everybody knows that football fans and grounds are treated differently than any other sport (you can thank your so called glory years for that).
Point is persistent standing is not tolerated and clubs can incur large fines if not seen to try and tackle the 'problem'. That is where your tannoy announcement comes in, informing fans that persistent standing is not tolerated and you can be ejected. Then after that the safety officer will make a decision that it is far to hostile to make any ejections so for the safety of stewards standing will be tolerated but 'sanctions will be put into place to prevent this problem again', though these new sanctions will look a lot like the current sanctions and nothing will change.
So its not the fact that there are 2 to 3000 hardcore liverpool fans that idea is just stupid, its not individual clubs taking it up on themselves to piss you off (though I have been to a few grounds where this is the case but they take the rules to literally).
Ive been a steward for 6 years now and I have never thrown anyone out for standing (not because I feel intimidated), the fact is that its a stupid rule but as it is written in ground regulations clubs do have to be seen to enforce it. Simple really.
