Driving me round the bend at the moment and my provider are as much use as a chocolate watch, they just say turn off 3G.
I have 500mb of data per month and for two years I've gone no higher than 280mb. Last month it hit 1gb with no change in my activity on the phone. Cost me an extra £38 last month.
I have since updated to the new operating system (via WiFi) as a few boards say that Apple keeps trying to force the update. I have factory reset the phone and turned off all notifications.
I am 3 days into a new month and it's already used 173mb. Including a day when it used 65mb when I left it in a draw unused. Looking at details on my bill there is a constant data usage every 20 odd seconds between 1:35pm to 2:02pm and again around 3:30pm.
Anyone else having an issue?

Best bet would either be to get a plan with lots more data or change provider to one who does if possible. Smartphones like the iphone depend on data for lots of their apps, and 500mb is nothing. My personal favorite is the one plan from 3.

I think this is my only option but a very frustrating one. I am not using this data. There are quite a few people having the same issues but the data leak cannot be linked to any one issue.
My current attempt to stop this is to empty my email account just in case the phone downloads ALL my emails every time it goes looking for new emails.

you can monitor your usage directly from the iPhones settings - go into settings, general, usage, scroll down. On your billing date, just reset your stats and keep an eye on it!
Best bet is to find out how much a bundle of data is to add on to your plan every month, cheaper to buy en bloc.
I'm on three, and use their one plan. £4.99 on top of the £30 a month, but gives you unlimited internet use, and Free tethering for laptops or other connected devices.

have you checked that your personal hotspot option is off Wayne? i know it sounds silly, but it could be that using up all your data.
T-Mobile do that £36 P/M plan with the iphone where you get 2000 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited data usage. See if you can switch to them or one of the others mentioned??

I am resetting my usage every morning and by the next morning it's around 50-70mb. That's my usage gone in three days. I can get 1gb for an extra £2.50, great value but it's the friggin phone and not me.
I sometimes wish I had a Nokia 8210 still.

Don't know if the app Onavo would help. It shrinks data. Some one sent it to me

Have you closed all background apps as that's where the data will likely be used. If you don't know how to do it go onto youtube.

Have you got things like weather/facebook/twitter/emails syncing regularly?
Seems strange for it to use that much data without you doing anything.
