Why Mull of Kintyre?

Sun Oct 21, 2012 6:37 pm

Couldn't work out why they were playing Mull of Kintyre yesterday both before the game and at the start of the second half.

Was Paul McCartney actually come from Nottingham rather than Liverpool?

Do they have a link to a remote Scottish island?

Were they taking the piss out Malky's constant selection of Scotland's finest, Don Cowie?

And what on earth were they singing when the music stopped and they carried on?

We use the tune of "Mull of Kintyre" but not the words. We were singing the chorus of a special song for us

City Ground, O mist rolling in from the Trent
My desire is always to be there
O City Ground

The mist is something that makes us special, our ground as you know is only a few yards from the river Trent and especially in the sixties and seventies, for no apparent reason mist would seep into the ground from the river, round the Trent End and become so thick that not only could you not see the far end, you had difficulty seeing the goalposts in front of you as well. The referee, of course, would have to take the players off. Sometimes the mist would disappear as quickly as it came, sometimes the match would have to be abandoned.

The song was written in the late 1970s, shortly after Wings had their hit.

The verse is rarely sung now but the words are

Far have I travelled and much have I seen
Goodison, Anfield are places i've been
Maine Road, Old Trafford still echo the sound
Of the boys in the red from the City Ground

Maybe it doesn't feel right to sing it outside the top division and we'll wait until we get back there to update it.

There is supposed to be a second verse but no-one seems to remember it now.

The Wings version is played to start people off, as soon as they hear the tune they start singing and drown out McCartney, it's then faded out so people can go for it.

Pleased to help.

Yes, thanks from me too. Knew it was something about the mist from the Trent, but did not know the full story :ayatollah:
