My take on yesterday, malky and this season...

Sun Oct 21, 2012 4:09 pm

I was extremely frustrated with yesterdays performance and tactics. Unless Noone had a slight knock i don't understand why he needed to be rested yesterday after a 2 week international break. When the lad came on we looked a completely different side. Gunnarsson has been dreadful this season and has added nothing to the team when he has played. It speaks volumes when whitts was our most effective tackling midfielder yesterday. Credit to whitts, i thought he worked his nuts off yesterday but Cowie and Gunnarsson should have been doing that job to allow whitts to play. I think Helguson is to pedestrian and static to play alone up top in a 4-5-1.
I dont understand why Malky insists on changing a winning formula when we go away. If it's not broke dont fix it. We have looked awful away this season and superb at home which makes me believe it must must be down to the change of formation.

I have defended Malky a lot on this board but i am concerned over some of the signings he's made in the summer. I believe the money spent on kim and etien are massive gambles. Both players look no closer to atarting now than they did in August and we're almost in November. Wolves and Leicester have shown that there was value to be had in France with the signings of Sako and Leicesters winger. We spent a lot on kim and etien and surely they will have to start making and impact soon. I still think we need more pace in the squad. The loss of Maynard was an absolute hammer blow in my opinion and he needs to be replaced. Bellamy cant play every game, so when Noone has an off day we look one dimensional like last year.
If Malky has money i really hope he addresses these things.

I'm not calling for Malky's head by any stretch of the imagination and i'm more than happy with our home form, i just hope he doesnt dig his heels in and tinkers a little with our set up away and realises these teams are there for the taking.

You make some valid points and i agree with most of what you have posted, to be fair to malky with the noone/conway situation, he probably had to start with conway considering that when he came on against ipswich for a very poor noone he changed the game, unfortunatley for conway, he's now blown his chance and noone will start on tuesday, malky must now stop with this 4-5-1 away from home, it does'nt work for us, we should be playing to our strengths which is attacking teams, lets hope he has finally got the message.

I think there is too much pressure on Noone to perform when Bellamy isn't playing. If Malky was gonna play 4-5-1 yesterday he could have played noone and Conway out wide then played tommy smith in the middle with whitts and Gunnar/cowie

Good post with many sensible points. MM needs to bring in a targetman to help HH and we need to play 442 both home AND away. We turned it around at Ipswich when we went 442 and almost did it again at Forest but the mountain was too big and Malky left it too late. There's some good teams in this division but if we could find a striker to replace Maynard there is nothing to fear. :ayatollah:

Spot on post but what I would say is that you couldn't really judge etien and kim given the amount of game time they've had.

I largely agree with the points made by the o.p., but the one thing that I disagree with is the criticsim of Kim Bo and Velakonioa. From what I've seen, they both look good, and if they were given any real time to acclimatise to this league, I suspect they would be carcking signings - the problem is Malky, as he won't give them a go for any sizeable amount of time, as he's got his favourites who he will always chose in front of them - especially Cowie.

I still like Malky as a person, but I usually try to make a good few away games each season, but with the negative tactics he adopts away from home, what's the point this year, as you know it will be just one massive frustration.

We may just get into the topp 2 at the end of the season (but its far from certain), but if we played to our strengths away from home, we'd walk this league in my opinion.

It wasn't my intention to criticise kim and etien. What i was trying to point out is that if these players werent gonna be able to hit the ground running (or least by late october) we may have been better off spending the large % of our budget that we spent on the players elsewhere.
I may very well be proven wrong and these two may set the championship on fire from november onwards but i think it looks a long way off at the moment. :ayatollah:

Very valid points. Obviously Malky dont feel Etien or Kim Bo can add enough right now, or
they would be playing. So will they turn out to be a waste of money. Or is he a genius at
finding talent and the pair of them are being groomed, educated and prepared to hit the
ground running in the next month or two?

I hope its the latter
