Malky unhappy with defensive errors

Sun Oct 21, 2012 4:09 am

MALKY MACKAY admitted crucial defensive errors let his side down at the City Ground.

Andy Reid’s brilliant 25th minute free-kick put Nottingham Forest on the road to victory but Cardiff City boss Mackay pointed the finger at his defenders for goals two and three.

Daniel Ayala rose highest in a crowded goalmouth within two minutes of Reid’s opener and then Cardiff were sliced open when Billy Sharp and Radoslav Majewski exchanged passes for the former to score within moments of the re-start.

”We lost goals at crucial times and you can’t lose goals like that and expect to win,” said Mackay.

”We started off well with a great break from Kevin McNaughton down the right hand side in the first 10 minutes and had one off the line.

”We were pretty comfortable but goals change games and that fantastic dead ball from Andy Reid settled them down. Two minutes later we’ve got to defend the cross better and that gives them a bit of breathing space.

”And a couple of minutes into the second half, well, we’ve certainly got to be better than that.”

Mackay admitted there was a hint of offside during the build-up which led to a McNaughton foul on Reid and the subsequent free-kick.

But he admitted: “I’m certainly not making any excuse for that.

”I wondered about the offside but I wasn’t sure if their player touched it.

”A few hands went up but you’ve just got to play to the whistle. It (offside) could have been the case but you’ve just got to play the game at that point.”

Heidar Helguson’s third goal in two games 15 minutes from time gave Cardiff hope that they could pull off an astonishing comeback.

”The third goal gave us a mountain to climb,” said Mackay.

”But it was a a mountain on another day that I felt we might have climbed.

”We ended up with 15 attempts on their target in the second half and threw everything at them.

”On another day one or two of them might have gone in – we hit the post and had two blocked on the line which would have taken it to 3-2.

”With mounting pressure on their goal that would have changed things.

”But we haven’t lost the game through rustiness after two weeks without a game.

”Somebody’s just got to go and attack a header and don’t have two people going for the one ball which happened for the third.

”It’s just things that people need to do better.”

What game was he f*cking watching how can a team be comfortable when we was parked in are own half without a shot on target for 62minutes

”The third goal gave us a mountain to climb,” said Mackay.
He done nothing after both goals or the third goal so no idea what hes on about it took 69mins for him to make a change of anything even though they scored 5mins in to the 2nd half to make it 3-0

”We ended up with 15 attempts on their target in the second half and threw everything at them.
Thats funny it says TWO on target here, i remember the goal and the bar shot so maybe this site is wrong. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19939479

No thats rite we lost because your stuck in your ways and have been since last xmas while playing away from home, trying to change games when behind by THREE goals in the 69minute does not work its your formation your team 100% you take the flack when you f**k up like this game, but its always defensive errors you say yet your the one that lets them sit on our own 18yardline with 11men behind the ball away from home what do you expect, f**k me

Took these parts out gav im amazed at them

sounds familiar!

didn't he say the same after Palace?

Lost against Bristol City = Malky " Too many defensive errors".

Lost against Crystal Palace = Malky " Too many defensive errors".

Lost against Nottingham Forest= Malky "Too many defensive errors".

Of course it could be that if you only have one striker up front, and play hoof ball, and you'r best midfield play is playing too far back then the ball will be returned more often, then the percentages of mistakes will increase. If we had the the best defenders in the world then this might work, but we haven't.
Malky you have a stubborn streak, which in many cases might be a good thing, but in this case it is not working, we made Forest look the better side yesterday, when I feel if we had had played Noone and whitts further forward, they would have had to absorb the pressure and not us. We need six points this week, for our own good, and to put pressure on others.

Sounds like he has lost the plot. Forest had two weeks off as well. To many defensive errors ? More like to many Managerial errors me thinks

I think Ben Turner is a shoe-in now for Tuesday but who does he drop? Maybe Kev?

I said a while ago, we were short of 2 good quality defenders and I still believe this to be true. :o

Drop Kevin McNaughton for once, stick Connolly in as full back and have Hudson & Turner together. We miss someone like Turner

Maybe if the stupid jock didn't play so defensive we wouldn't be defending all the time to make defensive f*cking errors!!

Don't agree with this, I don't think Connolly has the pace to play out wide. Kev is good at going forward, something Connolly won't be able to do and at home we need that.

Let's be honest MM is only saying what every other manager will say after his team had just been badly beaten and that's exactly what happened yesterday another bad away defeat.

But to put some perspective on our away performances this season we should look at the defensive performance of the teams that won automatic promotion during the last 9 seasons. 10 clubs had the best away defensive record in the league that season whilst a further 6 clubs were in the top 4, one had the 6th best defense and one had the 10th best. Currently we have the 17th best away defensive record in the Championship. :o Only Watford, Burnley, Millwall and Ipswich have conceded more goals away from home.

Leicester City currently have the best home defensive record in the Championship and the 7th best away. History will tell us Leicester City have a far better chance than us of automatic promotion, at this moment.

We have the 2nd best home defensive record but need a massive improvement in our away performances to have a realistic chance of automatic promotion.

In my opinion the person responsible for organising the team is MM. Over to you Malkay.

What I believe the total imbalance of the midfield has also contributed to the defensive howlers we are seeing. When we attack it goes through the midfield. We also defend with the help of the midfield.
Because of the total imbalance In midfield we are not creating chances on goal and we are not defending as a team. Can anyone say the balance of the team is right when we play away from Home ?

We need to sort out our away form, we are only in October and we have had 3 away games where we didnt just lose
we let in 10 goals that is not the form of a team that gets promoted, we let in 4 at bristol 3 at palace and 3 at Forest
so I believe until that is addressed we will stay in the championship this season.

If you look at QPR when they went up and other teams their defence was great very little goals let in we have now had for a few seasons scored plenty but we let in way to many and we are still are with all the money we have spent.

If Malky gets money in January then we need defenders good defenders too we have a good midfielders but up front we have spent money too a 2 million pound striker who had not played yet so I have trust in malky but I have concerns

IMO We dont need any more players, we need to use the one's we have correctly. We could have the best defenders in the World but unless you have the correct balance through the rest of the tesam it wont get any better. Its not a case of throwing money at this problem its Malky needs to sort himself out as the buck stops with him on this one. Sorry !!

Well, if the defenders are making too many mistakes why doesn't Malky drop some of them and replace them with.....oh, I forgot. We don't have anyone to replace them with!

Perhaps the back five don't feel under enough pressure to perform knowing that they are extremely unlikely to be dropped no matter how they play.

Back five try back 9 or ten at corners or set pieces because thats what we look like away from home on are 18yardline for most of a agame as thats what he ALWAYS sets out and does from the start or we carry on playing it after getting lucky by scoring one out of about 3-4 attempts on target which is what we get away from home on average of chances, even then the other team mostly score one with one of the many attempts they get on our goal because we are camped and hoofing it.
