Away support

Thu Oct 11, 2012 4:09 pm

How comes when we was getting 3-4k home gates back in the late 90s we would sometimes take 2k fans away even 1k fans to most away games thats half our home support, yet we get 23k ish at home these days over a season i would say our away support is lower now even though we have seven times more fans watchign at home games. It makes no sence to me ?

Maybe but the point is we get SEVEN times more home support now and take less fans away than when we was getting 3-4k at home :ayatollah:

It's a tricky one, think restrictions, CCTV, prices etc have all had an effect, and the fact we've been in this league for donkeys years, who knows, i think our away support is quite good though tbf.

all to do with ticket prices, when we were in the lower leagues, how much were the tickets?????????compared to prices now? in the dungeon we most prob paid less for a ticket and travel than what a ticket alone costs these days

You can't compare our away support to back in those days, ticket prices were 10 times lower back then.

Re: Away support

It's the cost mainly. Also, most of our home support is season tickets now which inflates the crowd. If it was pay per game for home games the crowds would average about 10000 I reckon which is only 10 times our average away support. We didn't used to average anywhere near 1000 away in dungeon days but took very big numbers to certain games.

all the restrictions, bans, police hassle,ID cards etc, aswell as expense have killed it for many. apart from wembley i havent been away 4 years and that started due 2 the rave scene in 1991!!

season tickets have always been available no matter what league we ve played in  and if they werent most would still go and pay on the day

It's a catch 22 situation. The people who crave the turning up en masse at the drop of a hat in your provincial towns and cities nationwide are now fairly bored with what it's all become. We could moan about"the good old days"before the police clampdowns and relentless bubbles but it was those same people(I'll include myself in that)who gave the powers that be no choice in imposing such restrictions. Finances are definitely a factor but the away day match experience has gone - but that's not just for us - it's nationwide. Our support has gone through a season by season dumbing down, which one hand we could say we're partly to blame but after Panarama and the mythical propaganda about our support we then had to suffer years of ridiculous measures and herded from service station, train station to cattle markets cleverly disguised as away ends.

More should be done though at home and away. The brilliant Manchester United fan and journalist Andy Mitten tweeted last week about Borussia Dortmunds fantastic support at the Etihad. The European clubs and authorities embrace, liase, help and in several cases fund their Ultras who bring a passion, colour and atmosphere to their games that are a thing of the past in the UK. I think it would be possible to emulate this, but our clubs and authorities are too set in their ways. A big shame

So most say its the prices of football these days but wages have changed since then im sure, another reason but speaking for myself i would go short on something to watch us away back then compared to now, the atmosphere is not as good in away ends to what it used to be nore do i feel the same fire in my belly before games, maybe others feel the same and thats why, but you would think having 23k at home you would take more away than when we used to get 4k at home tops, money, police ect call it what you want as to why its less. The bottom line is we still have seven times more home support than we did back in the late ninetys, so we should be taking lot more fans away now than back then. :ayatollah:

The FA arent helping with the fixture lists aswell with so many more evening games then before making it hard for people to get time off work and this quite silly habit of having 2 away matches after each other
look at november for example
3rd bolton away
6th charlton away
24th barnsley away
27th derby away
most people are probably going to miss at least one of those fixtures due to the sheer cost

The fact that you have to be an away member or season ticket holder has stopped many of my mates going to games in London, which are local to them. It might not stop a lot of us, but they were the same people that would turn up at away games at the last minute in the past but have now been put off by the extra bureaucracy and cost.
Even now, I hate buying my tickets in advance.

It use'd to be fun,and now it,s not

big thing is not only away ticket pricing, but the cost of the whole day, transport, food drink ect ect.

people on here saying £19 for us to smash watford, yes it might be good, but its gonna cost me alone £12 return train, food and drink is a £5er

so on a cheap match day im still throwing £36 quid out for a day out which for some of us is quite a bit for just a few hours out. so its all about picking a game now for me, then going to that, and may be being forced to wait a good few games before i can even consider going again sadly. i miss the days of ninian park, cheap tickets, the trainfare was cheap and just being with the fans was entertainment enough.

Simply cost, same as Annis thread about a week ago.
Me going away now alone would cost over £100
Even £10 years ago it would be £50 max, together with earning less money its simply less games

Wont watch them in red so will only do away games against teams who wear red.but dont think the owners give a f**k about fans turning up,just tv in malasia ,I dont care how loud the malasian fans are ,the team will never hear them.

I was going to do the same but I had already bought my ST before this rebrand lark tbh, then just went with it as we had no choice. :ayatollah:

Yes, but very few used to have season tickets - we paid on the day. People used to pick and choose more which games they went to more. Our crowds would halve without such a high number of season ticket holders.
