Any runners on here lads and lasses? I've been running now for about 6 weeks, and the last couple of days, I've had some shocking pain in my right knee when I straighten it. It's fine when I'm actually running, but straightening it makes me wince. I've just started road running, so could the change of surface cause it? Sorry for asking stupid questions, just don't want to bother the quack just yet. Thanks all

Could be your arches. You may have flat feet or something. Puts pressure on your knee.

Could be this Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)
I started cycling about 2 months ago (far too fat). I did my first 40 miler after a few weeks and did this.
I couldn't walk up stairs (or pedal) but I could walk or run.
Rest seemed to cure it and a basic wrap.

There is a simple cure for your pain....don't straighten your leg!
On the serious side be careful, you could have a small tear or a loose bit of cartilage which is lodging somewhere it shouldn't when you straighten.

This usually happens on Tarmac when your coming to a close with your stamina. Your strides become shorter and heavier. Try and finish it with a bang. Big strides big effort until your flaked out. Hope this helps

Cheers all. I'm not used to long distance running. I always used to play 5 a side, but an ankle injury put paid to that. Perhaps I should just grow old gracefully, and release the inner beer belly

I went to a podiatrist. He made me walk on a mat that was linked to a computer. I then stepped into some foam in the little boxes.
He sent the data and boxes away to get some insoles made for me. That dude cured me. No problems since.
Insoles do take a bit of getting used to though.

ACE in Sanotorium Road ?? (near stadium). Went there, sold me biff inserts, and highly recommend.
Hard to walk in at first but you get used to them.
Alternative, is to give in to old age, grow fat and lazy, as it takes much less effort.
I have been fighting old age and injuries for some time, as I do not feel I will be good at the old age stuff. Hurts at times but do feel better. Probably crippled by the time I make old age??

Are you carrying a bit more weight since you last did alot of phys? It is possibly your knees responding to the extra pressure on the joint.

Leeweb,
I am a long distance runner, to actually answer your question, it is 90% likely that it is your shoes. You can really cause serious knee trouble if you do not go to an actual store (if you guys have those over there) and buy shoes.

Cardiff don't run

A shoe store that specializes in running shoes that is. You should change your shoes about every 300-500 miles.

I agree with the comment about the running shoes, i used to suffer terrible shin splints, changed the brand of shoe & it cured within weeks. My personal choice is Asics, 18 marathons & never suffered an injury. Also try not to do all your running on hard surfaces.
