CARDIFF CITY - HELGUSON

Sun Oct 07, 2012 8:14 am

Do we think Malky Mackay has told him to 'get in that 6 yd box and get the tap-ins'?

Or

Has Malky Mackay told him to work the channels, tie up defenders, link midfield and
attack, create space for others, run his bollocks off.

If its the latter, do we think Helguson should ignore his manager, and start attacking the
6 yard box more, so he can get more goals?? because thats what he's paid to do?

Or

Do we think the current system is working fairly well, given that we are the top goalscorers
in the division and top of the table, having won 7 out of 10 games.

Probably a bit off both but I think he definitely benefits from having a partner to share the workload. Personally, I would have preferred to see Velikonja come on instead of Rudy yesterday as Conway showed what pace could do against their tiring defence but MM called it right because we won the game with his substitutions.

Sitters he scored yesterday, but aslong as he gets in the box if we are getting shots in from all over he will get more no doubt :ayatollah:

both dave.when the ball is played out wide to be slung in the box then he needs to be in the box.on the approach play he is a pivitol target to hit.if he makes channel runs the idea would be either play him in because he will at worst keep it and lay it off or to make a hole for a midfielder to arrive late into in a central area.at this level of football the bloke,s ability surely cannot be questioned

goals are goals, and hes paid to be in the right place at the right time, although i disagree with you on the second goal because he mede the run to get on the back post..

The most ludicrous post ever on here was when some lunatic said that for
the style of play Helguson offers.. We might as well have got a big striker
out of the League of Wales

Same as last year.

The issue yesterday was the midfield playing to deep.

Once the MM saw the line up we should have crushed them in midfield.

malky was a tough centre back.i reckon he knows what makes a good target man

Re: CARDIFF CITY - HELGUSON

I think a bit of both, when we play with just 1 up front he has to do all the donkey work, but when he has someone up there with him he can get in the box as we saw last night. :ayatollah:

Most people have grizzled in the past that we have no plan B.Did you spot it yesterday! It occurred to me as the game went on that even though they were 1-0 up their CB partnership left alot to be desired and Nooney probabley had the quietest game he's had so far.Not dissing him he'll probabley win games for us this season.Que Malky-sends on Conway,Gestede-the crosses start flying-game-over.Well done Malky. 8-)

Re: CARDIFF CITY - HELGUSON

Helguson is never going to get the ball 35 yards out, turn and run through ripping new arseholes into our opponents centrebacks, Lets face it he is 35 years old and those days are long behind him if he ever was that type of player. What he does, and it's something that currently only Rudy can offer as an option, is take the hard knocks for the team.

Yesterday whilst we were just keeping our shape and inviting Ipswich on he looked a lonely and isolated player, but that changed when Conway came on and Mason moved up front in a 4-4-2 formation. It really doesn't matter if his goals were "Tap ins" because when he needed to be there he was and for a striker that's what is most important.

When MM changed to 4-4-2 it stopped their fullbacks bombing on and the presence of Mason alongside Helguson gave Ipswich different problems and also gave Helguson more room. When Rudy came on it gave Ipswich a huge problem because they had two good target men strikers to deal with and they couldn't.

For the last 30 minutes of that game we pretty much dominated thanks to the formation change by MM, Conway was excellent when he came on and from the moment we scored the only question was could Ipswich hold out for a point.

They couldn't because of the movement of Helguson whilst the Ipswich centrebacks were shitting themselves about how they deal with Rudy. Great movement, anticipation and finish by Helguson to win the game.

Few clubs in this League would enjoy having to deal with Helguson and Rudy but we won't always need to have both on the pitch, yesterday it was about needs must and MM changed things perfectly and Ipswich had no answer.

Next time we will have Bellamy, Mutch and Smith availablr for Forest away so expect us to be far more on the front foot than we were yesterday.

Edwards had Noone's number to be fair. Luckily for Noone and us he won't come up against many right backs with that much pace this season or those who converted from a winger. Edwards only knew what Noone was going to do a lot of the time as he used to be a winger himself so he could anticipate a lot of what he was going to do.

Helguson is class. Works effortlessly, presses, drags defenders out of position and with the right delivery can score as we saw yesterday. Sitters? Yes they were but it takes great anticipation and positioning to get sitters. Typical poachers goals.

Completely agree with this. Edwards is a cracking player and not many wingers will get the better of him. Also there's no such thing as a sitter, it takes a poachers instinct and talent to get into position to make em sitters

If he wasn't in position for the first goal some would be complaining that he should have been there. I'm sure I heard about 80% of headers are scored across goal. That's because keepers stand closer to the near post when the ball is in wide areas to prevent being beaten there. Taylor should get a lot of praise for making the chance easier than it might have been but he still had to put it in. It seems he's damned if he does damned if he doesn't at times. It's nice to see some positive posts though to add some balance.

Re: CARDIFF CITY - HELGUSON

At the end of the day the 3 goals Helguson scored in the league was all about being in the right place at the right time.

Mcnaughton dragged his shot and if Helguson wasn't there then it would of went out (Bristol) alright we lost but he got a lifeline during that game.

Yesterday he read the mistake and got a goal to tie the game.. most strikers would of just stepped back and think the keeper has it.

The winner he didn't care about what the defenders was doing he just attacked the ball and got a cracking header. :ayatollah:
