2006/07 Season - A Better Start

Sat Oct 06, 2012 7:00 pm

But what a nightmare of a finish.

After 10 games in 2006 we were top on 23 points one more than now. We won our next two games, topped the league on 29 points a massive SIX ahead of the next team.

We then went on a 13 game run without a win between 11 Novemebr and 17 January. We lost 7 of out last 8 games of the season and drew the other.

We finished 13th, what an awful season after such an amazing start.

All feels much different this year. :ayatollah:

careful.

it doesnt feel different at all. at the time we thought we were invincible! just means none of us should get ahead of ourselves.

we had a very good squad then, but a better one now i think

Just checked the line up for our 4-0 win against Wolves. I think the squad is better. Amazing to think Kevin was there back then.

Starting line-ups
1 Neil Alexander 7
6 Glenn Loovens 8
2 Kerrea Gilbert 7
19 Riccardo Scimeca 9
3 Kevin McNaughton (Kamara 32) 7
5 Darren Purse 8
11 Paul Parry (Flood 81) 8
16 Joe Ledley 8
10 Stephen McPhail 8
8 Michael Chopra 8
9 Steve Thompson (Campbell 67) 7
Substitutes
12 Roger Johnson
14 Willo Flood (Parry 81)
25 Malvin Kamara (McNaughton 32) 8
20 Kevin Campbell (Thompson 67) 7
18 Luigi Glombard

Starting line up was good, but the bench was sh1te (except Johnson, who to be fair had done f-all by then) just shows how thin the squad was.

Wayne, great thread :ayatollah:

That team was punching well above their weight early doors. Thompson, Scimeca and Gilbert were not good enough but its the subs that give it away. Malvin Kamara? Willo Flood? Luigi Glombard was even on the bench ffs....

Scimeca was very very good for us. But you are right about squad strength. if Ricky, Loovens and Chops hadn't got injured we might well have gome up.

He did have a hot spell mower, won't argue with you there.

In general though it was nowhere near as good as what we have now - which I consider our best squad ever when everyone is fit, by a country mile.

Yes, would still like Ledley and Scimeca at their best here now.

But to be fair, I'm loving this bunch, even in the shitty red shirts

Then the other x factor is the quality of the manager, who I also consider better although he has been given more proper dough to spend.

I am growing to like red

We ended that season losing 3-1 to Ipswich of all teams. By then we only barely had a half decent spine of Johnson - Whittingham - Ledley - Thompson.

Appalling Forde was in goal and Warren Feeney was up front (sorry Annis but he was awful). On the bench was Matthew Green!!

Ramsey was around somewhere but Jones was doing his usual trick of ignoring young talent. No Chopra's either, had he gone?

Starting line-ups
15 David Forde
3 Kevin McNaughton
5 Darren Purse
12 Roger Johnson
11 Paul Parry
7 Peter Whittingham
40 Darcy Blake
16 Joe Ledley
10 Stephen McPhail
37 Warren Feeney
9 Steve Thompson
Substitutes
1 Neil Alexander
2 Kerrea Gilbert
44 Chris Gunter
14 Willo Flood
36 Matthew Green

Jones had the lost the plot by then, big time. Chops injured.

Feeney & Thompson = two strikers who couldn't hit a barn door at this level.

We didn't need to worry, if Feeney or Thompson were injured we also had Jason Byrne. :D However I cannot say a bad word against him as he scored at Wolves when their dick of a chairman banned us and we then went and beat them. Watched the game under the stand at Ninian, it went mental. I have a vid somewhere.
