Coleman explains why Ramsay was axed as captain

Sat Oct 06, 2012 8:25 am

CHRIS Coleman has explained his reasons for axing Aaron Ramsey as Wales captain, claiming the former Cardiff City ace was feeling the pressure of the armband.

Coleman took the dramatic step of telling Caerphilly-born Ramsey he was no longer international skipper in a face-to-face meeting on Thursday, appointing Swansea City defender Ashley Williams in his place.

But although Coleman said Ramsey was left disappointed by the decision, he claimed the 21-year-old had admitted to struggling with the responsibility of leading the national side.

And the Wales boss has now challenged the playmaker to flourish in the freedom of letting Williams lead the side out at Cardiff City Stadium next week come the crunch World Cup qualifier with Scotland.

Coleman has been left needing a drastic change of fortunes following a winless spell since taking over from the late Gary Speed, the man who appointed a 20-year-old Ramsey as captain in March 2011.

And, after naming his 21-man squad for the games with the Scots and Croatia in Osijek four days later, he said: “It’s something I looked at for a while.

“Aaron is young and I think he’s noticed the pressure as well.

“Having spoken with him, he was incredibly mature about it and, if I’m honest, maybe a little bit relieved because there is a big pressure.

“So I think it was the right thing to do for him and for us.

“Of course he was disappointed. Captaining your country is something that you always want to do as a player – but not everyone can do it.

“When you look at captains of Wales, Gary Speed, Barry Horne, Kevin Ratcliffe, Terry Yorath, they a lot more experienced than Aaron.

“There is a lot of pressure on Aaron because plays for Arsenal, is a quality player and the captain of Wales. With that, the expectation grows and that’s not always fair.

“I think it would be good for him to take a step back, concentrate on himself, and start performing like we know he can.

“Going forward, I think we need someone more experienced and we have that in Ashley.”

Coleman denied he was making the former Bluebird a scapegoat for the wretched run of form that culminated in the 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Serbia last time out.

And he added: “Aaron being captain is not the reason why we’ve been losing.

“One of the reasons we have been is because I’ve stuck to what was being done and not necessarily done it my own way ...and that’s my fault.

I wonder what Aaron has to say about it ?

Of course Coleman's public courting of Shawcross didn't exactly help Ramsey did it ?

Terrible, terrible man-management.

That man is seriously clueless. If he was keeping things the same we wouldnt keep getting battered.
I am not lioking forward to seeing him do it his own way.

Regardless of results, the way he has treated Rambo is enough to lose the welsh footballing public. Our terrible form just cements how awful Coleman is.

I would never hope for a loss for a team I support, but if we lose our next 2 games as *expected*, that SURELY must be the final nails in the coffin?

I would seriously consider temporary retirement if I was Ramsey. He's just been shat upon time after time by Coleman for no real reason.

It's a sad reflection that our only realistic option as captain other than Ramsey is an English born player. To change captain mid-campaign is really clutching at straws though. I love how Coleman has come out and said he's tried doing it the old way to keep consistency but is now going to do things his way as if he's trying to blame the last few results on anyone but himself.

The man is severely flawed in the fact that he has no limit to his stubbornness. He will never accept he's wrong and it's like having a shitter version of Toshack in charge.

I agree Aaron needs to concentrate on his own game though. Who would be captain ? Bale also to young so reluctantly maybe Williams only choice as it is to much for a younger player.
I won't let it coud my decision because of my dislike of Coleman. Perhaps this was a decision that Speed would of had to make as well if the pressure had got to much.

Agree to a certain extent but only about Coleman, fair play to Toshack he put in place some sort of structure with the Wales under 17's,19's & under 21's with probably the best Welsh coach Brian Flynn in place to oversee their development.

Coleman & the FAW have destroyed this structure.

Ramsey was crap when he was captain under Chris Coleman...and average at best under Speed.
You can't blame Coleman for that.
