GOALKEEPERS..

Mon Oct 01, 2012 11:17 am

Just don't get some of them.

Must have realy low ambition.

Take Carlo Cudicini, started his career with Milan in 1992, 20 years ago and in all that time he has only played just over 200 games.

Steve Harper, started a year later and has played 211 games in his whole career.

Then take Marshall for example, been playing for half the time of both of them and already played more games.

I appreciate that only 1 goalkeeper plays in a team but surely if they had ambition they would leave and play lower down the leagues if needs be, surely better than sitting on the bench for 20 years.

What a waste.

You mention Cudicini in a post regarding lack of ambition. :?

He started with Milan 1992, but didn't receive a game and decided to drop down a division to play with Como.

Between '92 and '99 he moved to several clubs in a bid to get more games, and then found his feet at Chelsea where he became one of the world's best 'keepers at the time, and was only forced out due to injury and the immense talent of Petr Cech nine years later.

The only move that doesn't make sense is his transfer to Spurs - and at that time he was 36.

Hardly lacked ambition, in my opinion. Injury has played a very big part in his career, after all.

Cech came to Chelsea in 2004, at that time Cudicini was 31, the perfect age for a keeper and at the pinnacle of his career, not only was Cucicni behind Cech is the peking order Chelsea also brought in people like Hilario who also played in front of Carlo on occasions.

Rather than leave to play regular football he hung around for another 5 years, wasting the best years of his career in my opinion before in 2009 at the age of 36 making a crazy move to Spurs.

Just my opinion mate but most keepers peak in their 30's and in my opinion Cudicini has had a wasted career either by a lack of ambition or bad choices.

Brad Jones is another one.

Been a pro for 12 years and hasnt even played 100 games.

And then signed for Liverpool to be 3rd choice.

No ambition, just looking at the ££

Ross Turnbull.

Clearly has no ambition of playing Football, has played 4 games since 2009.

Signed for Chelsea for the £, never going to be first choice.

Maybe their ambition in life is to make as much money as possible to support their families for generations to come.

Stuart Taylor age 31.

Been a Pro since 97.

Played 68 games in 15 years

Then signs for Man City to be 5th Choice.

So it would seem, shame realy as a waste of a career in my opinion all in the name of greed.

I would, all of the keepers named in this thread could have played week in week out at a lower Premiership or Championship Club
and still make a cracking living.

What else is it?

I'd give up playing competitive football for 40k a week.

Not accepting a lesser paid job is not greed. IMO.

If your were a Footballer would you honestly rather and earn say £40,000 a week at Chelsea and not play, or earn say £25,000 a week at somewhere like Fulham and play every week.

Yep.

But what you aren't considering is what happens to the fulham keeper if I decided to sign for them? He'd then be a bench player and you would be accusing him of not being ambitious, if he decides to move to Birmingham then the Birmingham keeper would then be a bench player and accused of lack of ambition.... And so it continues.

David James is the opposite played like a minge until his 106th birthday and robbed a club like Bristol who were to weak to drop him cos he was earning way to much to sit on the bench even though he couldn't keep chickens!!

Nah I have considered it mate, I did say in the OP that I appreciate that only 1 goalkeeper can play week in week out, but when you are a goalkeeper and you reach the age of 30 surely you are looking for be playing week in week out rather than just warm the bench and pick up a wage, something the guys Iv mentioned haven't done.

Well, that's stretching it a bit. Bournemouth thought he was, so they put him between the sticks. Take a look at 42.27 to 43.15:
