How long you going for ? I've been twice and love it there,if you want to take your misses for a meal I'd recommend Les Halles on Park Avenue. Very nice and not that dear.

I'm assuming your staying in Manhatten ? My advice is book your trip on-line to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis island on the ferry before you go .... It's going to be cold thou so take plenty of warm weather gear !
Then when you get there get a ticket for the New York sight seeing bus.You can pick these up on streets or the hotel can help you out. You will be able to see all of Manhatten and jump on / off as you choose. The guide will also point out many interesting places to see and facts about New York.
If you like shopping then fill your boots . I believe 5th Avenue is all you need.
Other of the most popular sights are :- Empire State Building , central station, Central Park , 9/11 site and Broadway.
The numbering of the streets and avenues makes it so easy to find your way around Middle and upper Manhatten and I didn't find it at all intimidating in the evening .
Enjoy !

Go ice skating and walking in Central Park. Take Statten Island ferry - its free and you get great views of Statue of Liberty and Manhattan from on board. Otherwise as the others say - it will be cold, it won't be cheap, but it is amazing!!

A few tips:
1. If you shop at Macy's go to the visitors centre and get a visitors discount card. You get 10% off which basically negates the sales tax. You'll need photo ID
2. There is a buffet restaurant / bar on the 70th ish floor of the Marriott Marquis hotel, Times Sq. it's revolving so you get great views of the city. Not cheap and there is a cover charge but worth a beer or two.
3. Take the subway to Clark St, Brooklyn and wander along the Brooklyn heights promenade for good views of manhattan across the east river. Then walk back to manhattan across the Brooklyn bridge
4. I always take the sky train / subway to and from the airport. Costs $7 per person but much cheaper than taxis if there's only 2 of you. Takes about an hour but no worries about traffic which can get very heavy at certain times.
5. Some really nice bars in the meat packing district. For cheaper beers get away from times sq and try areas such as Greenwich village and Amsterdam Ave (79th st). If you're anywhere around 35 or below you could still be asked for ID away from the midtown area so carry your drivers licence if you venture out.
6. Agree with previous posts about the Staten Island ferry for views of the statue. Unless you want to go up to the statue head I wouldn't bother with the often huge queues.
7. Also agree with the tip about going up the Empire State and top of the rock when the light is fading as you get 2 completely different views of day then night. You'll have to hang around a bit though and outside it'll be freezing but there're viewing decks inside.
8. If you like museums, the natural history museum is great and then you can walk from there to strawberry fields and past the Dakota building where Lennon was shot.
9. In times sq you'll no doubt be offered cheap tickets to the comedy club. Not a bad deal and i enjoyed it. barter with them. Often get a free drink with the tickey but following drinks can be expensive so make it last!
10. Normally if you're sat at the bar and open a tab, you'll get a free beer after every 4/5 you buy. So don't leave too early!
11. The heartland brewery at the Empire State is pretty reasonably priced for the lunchtime menu. Great fish & chips!
12. Never seen queues like the 5th ave Abercrombie store gets. Go to the one at Water St instead, which is in the downtown area near the Brooklyn bridge
Probably loads more but a lot depends on what you're in to and how much time you have.

I went in feb 2004 and can safely say that i have never been as cold in my life, but wrap up and you will be fine.there have already been some good tips on here regarding your visit.i will add a few.
1.if you want to go to the theatre and have something in mind,it may be an idea to book your tickets before you go,piece of mind etc.
2. When you go up the empire state building,i would hire the headphones that they rent out.it is an audio guide from a fictional new york taxi driver, tony, explaining all the sights and what to look for.really worthwhile.
3.unless you have already paid for breakfast in your hotel,do not have it there as it will be very expensive.have breakfast at cafes,(delis),which are everywhere and very reasonable.
4.natural history museum, where a night at the museum is filmed,is excellent.
5.book the empire state building in advance.the queues can be very long.
6.the pony and trap ride in central park is,very expensive for what it is
7.enjoy.its a great city to visit.been there twice and would definitely go again.

I heard the diamond district is better. A mate of mine bought his wife an eternity ring over there and was amazed at how much he had saved when he got home and had it valued over here.
