Cardiff City set to turn to Craig Bellamy after Nicky Maynard blow/plus Malky loan market

Sep 22nd 2012

CARDIFF CITY are set to turn to hometown star Craig Bellamy to keep their Championship charge at full throttle as they come to terms with the injury hammer blow suffered by striker Nicky Maynard.

The £2.75m Maynard looks likely to be out for the season after rupturing his cruciate knee ligament in the Bluebirds’ 2-0 win at Millwall in midweek.

Bellamy did not travel to the Den having just recovered from a calf tear, but will be in the Bluebirds squad today as they face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Maynard will have surgery on the knee within the next few days, but manager Malky Mackay has warned the 25-year-old, who has only made three appearances for his new club, faces up to nine months out. The Bluebirds could now turn to the talismanic Bellamy to keep their push at the top end of the Championship going in South London today.

“Cruciates are normally seven to nine months, it’s just that whenever it is right it is right,” said Mackay.

“We could face the prospect obviously of not having Nicky for the rest of the season.

“He will be looked after and given the best care and attention humanly possible.” to make sure he is back in a Cardiff City strip as quickly as possible,”

And Mackay admitted he could be tempted into the loan market to cover Maynard’s loss if the right opportunity presented itself, Mackay added: “Only if it’s something that jumps out at me and something that really grabs me.”

I think Bellamy in the Maynard role could be the making of the team. The midfield is immense without Bellamy in it and with him making runs behind the defence it could be scarey for the opposition.

I think Malky is over playing the time out for Maynard, but that is a good thing. Maynards particular ligament damage may see him out for half the season and not the full season.

Bellers was immense when DJ pushed him up top.

Problem is, he cannot play every week

I think the one up front could be beyond Etien of Mason. Perhaps 4-5-1 with Bellamy up top, then 4-4-2 with Helguson and Mason up top.
