Willing to put my neck on the line here but I honestly think he is better than Maynard.
Mason who was one of our stand out players last season and at one point last season rumours were going around that he was on his way to Arsenal. Put it this way Mason is the next big thing for the Republic of Ireland, he will be taking over from Robbie Keane. Mason is a very similar player to Maynard. Both have excellent movement and draw defenders in but I have to say I think Maynard getting injured is a blessing in disguise both for us and Joe. You watch Mason tear the league apart this season. Liverpool (who let me remind you had the second best defence in the premiership last season) couldn't handle his movement in the Carling Cup final and he scored a brilliant goal. Everyone was going on about how he would be tearing the Championship up this season, he hasn't started this season but every time he has appeared he has made an impact.
Watch us fly now. Mason is going to shine especially with the likes of Tommy Smith, Noone, Bellers and Whitts supplying him! Stop with the doom and gloom. I'm going to put my neck on the line here. Mason is better than Maynard, you will know what I mean come next May!

Not the same type of player for me. I think bellers is an ideal replacement though.
Mason, Helguson, Etien as other options gives us options still

Never

Different type of players altogether.
But i do have a belief that If Malky tells Joe:
When we break, I want you in that final third looking for space....
Joe will get 15-20 this season
Thats all we need from him, cos Whitts is gonna get close to 20 too

That's given me a lot of confidence in joey but you are right your putting your neck on the line

totally different player. my worry about mason is will he play up top in a 451? as i dont think he is suitable for that role.
imo he needs to play off etien/helguson.
also i imagine malky will go with helguson up top on his own on saturday.

Mason is still young, although he has a huge future ahead of him, i'm not sure if he is ready for the responsibility of getting 20 goals.
Fri Sep 21, 2012 9:02 am
Well mason has scored this season, in less apperances then maynard

na i cant choose between them, different players. mason likes to drop back abit to get on the ball, as in maynard plays on the last man every time

Etien for me, I saw him against Newcastle, and I liked the look of him, Pacy played on the shoulder of the last man, caught offside three times when he wasn't, scored a good goal with pace and strength.
None of us really know him but MM has been chasing him since his Watford days, I think he his an ideal replacement for maynard, also him and Joe would work well together

he did play well against newcastle, but it was a friendly, the league will be totally different

My dear taffyapple, the most important word in your posting is "if"........if Mackay tells Mason to go forward more,i suspect you have more confidence in Malky's willingness to attack more, than i have

I wasn't just referring to his Wembley goal. He came into this side last season because of poor form from Miller and he established himself and was our second best player of the season.

Yeah I know I know but I think our fans overhype him

He has to be given a chance. Anyway if he doesn't score our midfield will help us out with a few goals.

Hes not overhyped we arent exactlly saying he's the next Ronaldo

stop trying to be a smart arse. The kids a good player with alot of potential, his movement with the ball is brilliant and he could make it in the prem. So I agree he needs to be given a chance. And he's scores important goals not just that "one" goal at wembley

Personally i believe Joe Mason needs another 3 years to come up to Nicky Maynards standard not saying for one moment Joe is not a decent player but if you watch Maynard play he instintively makes the right choices with his eyes on the ground were as Joe has not learned that instinctive skill yet although he is undoubtedly very talented.

what a ludicrous post...
since maynard and bellamy have been playing we havent lost
with mason in the side we sturggled against huddersfield took a pasting off bristol and drew at brighton looking average

Also Maynard as the strength that would warrent a rugby style tackle from the likes of Gapor Gyepes to stop him when in full pelt, Maynard has so much strength which he uses so well to keep possession were as Joe is still lightweight in this department and gets taken of the ball on occasions which is a big difference.

And I agree with others in that he is not yet as good as maynard but they are different players
