Malky - "We Clicked against Wolves"

Tue Sep 04, 2012 4:30 pm

Malky Mackay praised the way his new-look side gelled in the 3-1 victory over Wolves on Sunday afternoon.

"We've signed ten new players this season, a bit like last season and that takes time to integrate," said the Gaffer.

"People don't just automatically click; some of them have only met each other a few days ago so I'm delighted they are beginning to get to know each other. Unfortunately now some go away on the international break. It takes time for people to get to know how each other play and with that being the case I am delighted with the way they clicked especially in the first half."

"Last year it was kids on the bench that we had to bring on and we had to hold onto guys that were on the pitch who were possibly flagging, but this year I am looking at it and I am able to bring Jordon Mutch off when he tires and put Aron Gunnarsson on who is the captain of Iceland. That's where strength in depth and consistency help you get promoted in this league.

"We didn't panic (after going behind) and we went straight up the other end. Craig Noone caused immense problems in that right back area and got the penalty. Peter slots it away as he does and we go on from there. We kept breaking and countering and the second goal was sublime.

"Peter's overall performance is one of the reasons I think the way I do about him and why he's central to everything I do at the football club. Since the day I came he's now signed another two contracts and that speaks volumes for what I think of him. His potential is still there for him to be better and he knows that and I will keep driving him every day. He scores a beautiful free kick, a top class free kick, a nice strike and an exquisite penalty but it's his overall game in terms of his leadership that I'm looking at, telling people where to go and his defending. The passing is there and the forward play is there but the all round play for a central player to play at the top level is where I want him to go.

"I look at Tommy Smith coming into the team today too; I don't think he gave the ball away once in the game and he makes correct decisions every time he is on the ball. Craig Noone takes people off their seats at times and will get better. We bring a new centre forward in Nicky Maynard, who I didn't think we would be able to get and we've managed to get him and he makes some really intelligent runs. Again, when he becomes match fit you'll see much more of those bending runs he makes."

He says all the right things Malky. I have complete faith in him that he knows what he is doing. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Yes but this will mean nothing if he goes back to 4-5-1 with no width and hoofball in the next game. :ayatollah:

I doubt he will if he's saying we clicked but only time will tell. This statement alone means to me that he is aware the tactics against Wolves were the right ones we need to use. Him picking up on that this soon could be the thing that ignites our season.

Last season our squad lacked depth so its hard to compare and sometimes you need to adjust a formation to keep a team out whilst trying to keep fitness levels maintained. This year we have the squad to be more expansive and attacking and we are able to rotate that so I think Malky will stick with the formation that is working.

He's playing the right tactics because he now has the correct players to utilise!

We are looking strong to be fair.

He will change formation depending on the team we play but it will be more effective now as we have a larger squad of players who will suit those formations
