Why did we move from Ninian Park?

Mon Sep 03, 2012 5:46 pm

We can't even fill the Cardiff City Stadium.

Surely it would have been better to wait for the demand from the fans and then increase the capacity.

Arsenal had an annual waiting list for season ticket holders, basically, a back log so their move made sense as they had people there ready waiting to purchase a seat in the new stadium.

We didn't have that. Would rather 10,000 less people go to the game and for it to be packed. Obviously, because of regulations, the standing areas would have to be changed to seating so less would fit in. I'd reckon Ninian Park would be around 16,000 fully seated. That would still be better than the current situation. Thousands of fans less attending but we wouldn't have had the cost of the stadium, only refurbishments. People who desperately wanted to go would have bought season tickets and others would have bought early. A packed Ninian Park was mesmerising.

Has to be one of the most stupid decisions in the history of football.

It had character and soul though.. not like this plastic shitty bowl

Re: Why did we move from Ninian Park?

Mon Sep 03, 2012 5:53 pm

Reason 3 it would have cost us about 1.5 mill a year in lost ticket revenue

Re: Why did we move from Ninian Park?

Mon Sep 03, 2012 5:57 pm

We got 18000 (at most) in Ninian and now we get a regular 21-22000.

On a handful of occasions we have gone over 25000, something we could never do at Ninian.

Re: Why did we move from Ninian Park?

Well the main reason is that iirc had we stayed at Ninian Park much longer, we would have had to convert the terraces to all seating. So the capacity would have been reduced by a hell of a lot.

The new stadium cost £48m to build.

A reconstruction job would have cost a bit so its not exactly that figure but will still take over 10 years to balance out. That is a very long time and we could have had a lot longer at Ninian Park.

Funny how Blackpool didn't splash out on a new stadium and also aren't riddled with debt like us.

Total quantity is a null point. Percentage of the stadium filled is better.

Spending £48m on a new stadium was stupid, especially when it wasn't our money.

We should have done a Blackpool job. Unless we become majorly successful it will take over 10 years to become a worthwhile expenditure.

Why? Well like all clubs they get new a stadium.
I always thought if we were ever going to get a bigger crowd we was never going to spend money on making Ninian Park.

A reconstruction job would actually have cost more. Remember we received £35m for the Retail Park land, £7m for Ninian Park land with the rest made up from a PMG loan.

To expand NP we would almost certainly have had to buy land and probably a few dozen houses before factoring in the cost of building new stands and all that without any salable assets like the Retail Park land.

It was falling down plus we were losing out on corporate hospitality events as at Ninian it was very poor and maybe non existent.

You still haven't explained where we were going to get the money from to rebuild NP? It is not just a case of expanding you need the room around the stadium to increase its capacity and the finance to do it.

Because the tiolets stank ,it was cold and dank in the Stands, it was an absolute shambles being herded into the temporary bars at halft time like cattle ,it took ages to get outside or inside thwe ground before and after the games the Floodlights were useless and dated ..........................

Re: Why did we move from Ninian Park?

Can't believe no one has put up the real reasons.

We had to get special dispensation off the League to allow standing at the stadium, this was given on a temporary basis because we had a new stadium in the pipeline, if not our capacity would have been limited to 11,000.

the stadium was refused permission to add extra seats, for a number of reasons, one being everyone had to exit on to one road, and if there had been an emergency under health and safety laws, we could not have emptied the stadium and got people away from there in the required time allowed.

So, we could have stayed there, in an all seater stadium that had a capacity of 11,000, don't think that would have been progress, but hey, what the f**k do i know.

Health & Safety.....it was rancid in the end.
Reduced capacity - approx 14000 all seater stadium
To make it larger it would have meant grants and major investment
No hospitality boxes
No-one would stump up the money to improve NP anyway
They all wanted a piece of the action re CCS.....they all had their cut out of it.
I rather like CCS......and I hated it initially.
It will take us into the Prem.....then see it flourish....the atmosphere is down to the team exciting the fans...nowt else.
Thats why. :ayatollah:

How is it? Blackpool seemed to cope in the Premiership after reconstruction. I was just wondering why we couldn't do the same. Gwyn has cleared that up and now I know it was most likely due to health and safety laws.

Are you for real mate? Why does it take for Gwyn to spell it out to you? Ninian park was a joke in the end. We are not in the 50's anymore. It was holding us back big time.
Yes the place was full of great moments in our history but it was time to move on.
Look back mate but don't stare.
