' Peter Whittingham excited by new-look Cardiff City after hat-trick '
By Terry PhillipsSep 3 2012

PETER WHITTINGHAM picked out his hat-trick goal, a sublime free-kick strike, as the best of his three in Cardiff City’s win against Wolves.

The midfield star led the Bluebirds back from a goal down to earn an outstanding Championship win, firing home his first from a penalty, a second from open play and the third from a free-kick which flew into the top corner.

“The third was my favourite because there was so little room in that corner,” said Whittingham.

“I struck it well and it was great to see the ball nestle in that top corner.”

Goalkeeper Carl Ikeme was at full stretch to try and claw the ball away, but Whittingham’s shot dipped beyond his fingers and into goal.

The former Aston Villa and England Under-21 player then took the match ball home with him after a second hat-trick for the Bluebirds.

“I scored one in a 4-3 win at Sheffield United a few years ago,” said Whittingham.

New signing Craig Noone won the penalty which set up Whittingham to make it 1-1 and he then fired home from a passing move which swept down the right with Nicky Maynard crossing low and Jordon Mutch stepping over to leave his team-mate in space.

“It was a good passing move and I’m just pleased I caught it well,” said Whittingham, who celebrates his 28th birthday this Saturday.

“The whole performance was excellent. Everybody played well.

“I’ve always said I wanted to get to the Premier League with Cardiff and that’s what I want to do this season,” he beamed.

“It’s important that I am enjoying my football, I enjoy playing for this club. I want to play at the top level and I don’t see why I shouldn’t do that with Cardiff.

“The competition for places is scary. Just look at the players amongst our subs and those who weren’t in the matchday squad. We have Craig Bellamy out injured, but he will be back soon.

“I don’t envy the manager that decision, but the competition is exactly what we need.”

City included Noone, signed from Brighton for £1m, and striker Nicky Maynard, a £2.75m capture from West Ham United, in their starting line-up, while Tommy Smith made his home debut.

“Craig looked sharp over the match,” said Whittingham.

“He brought so much to the team. Everybody contributed in every area.

“We looked dangerous in offence and defended solidly.”

Annis, I'm very excited about our squad this season and Whitts all round performance yesterday was awesome, I'm glad the transfer window is now closed
Craig Noone has been a breath of fresh air to our team but I can't understand for the life of me why Malky took him off and put Cowie on, very strange indeed.
Nicky Maynard is going to score a hatful with his pace IMO and Players like Bellamy, Noone, Tommy Smith and Kimbo whipping in crosses for him, another quality signing.
Bring on Leeds

One thing for sure there is no need for negative tactics with a squad like that. Its gonna be an interesting season and we now have a team that has flair bursting at the seems. I only hope Conway is also used as he is class in his own way.

Whitts had a good game yesterday and with the hatrick he was always going to get the man of the match award but there were also many other players who put in a good shift.

One thing I notice isn't being said is that Whitts jumped out of the defensive wall at the free kick where they scored leaving Marshall with little chance.

If Whitts had stood strong he would have blocked that shot. Come on Whitts sort it out son. ;)

Fair play Whitts said if he moved further forward he would score goals. Well yesterday he moved slightly forward from Anchorman to Central Midfield and bag a hat-trick.

You have to wonder what would happen if he moved front ;)

Did you see Van Persie's hat trick that Sky keep raving on on on about?

One deflected off the goalies knee (did not put it past the keeper), one a tapin and the third a good header from bad marking. Oh, and he missed a penalty.

Why don't they show Whitts hat trick as it had everything. Penalty (not really well taken, but scored), a great move for the 2nd and you will never see a better free kick ever (imo).

i wasnt having a go at the quality of the hattrick, the previous poster was suggesting he scored 3 because he was playing further forward, i was simply stating that it wasnt true

Actually Paul I was taking the piss, that's why I used the  ;) smiles. That said actions always speak loader than words and an hat-trick is a hat-trick.

Craig Noone has been a breath of fresh air to our team but I can't understand for the life of me why Malky took him off and put Cowie on, very strange indeed.

:ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:[/quote]

I think Dec ~ May was part of Malkys grand plan !!! ;) ;)

We practised watching paint dry to a point where we never looked like scoring or conceding a goal.
3-1 up with 15mins to go, MM killed the game because we can. DJ couldn't which was why we needed the fourth of fifth goal !!!

Ok they were 2 set pieces but we saw the Whitts of old on times.
The second showed it. Outside the box looking for space for a shot.
He kept coming short but when he got the second he come short then started going forward into space.
Smith stood out in ways for me as most Qpr Fans says hes a very clever footballer which shoed in his defensive play staying strong and drawing fouls. :ayatollah:

I thought (for a change) that Malky made the right substitutions at the right times and tactically helped us close out the game. Gunnar for mutch to add bite to the midfield and break any attacks, and then Cowie came in to help tighten things up.
Rather that and have a boring 20 minutes than concede a sloppy goal to make it 3-2 and then be on the back foot for the rest of the game..sound familiar!

Made a couple of good attacking breaks too

Indeed. I think Smith is like Conway in the defensive areas. We never lacked Smith going forward when he was defending. :ayatollah:
