So The Transfer Window Has Closed

Sat Sep 01, 2012 9:30 am

This morning I feel like the cat who got the cream despite the fact that we didn't get all the players we targeted and I think everyone will agree we are light on defenders. So why do I feel so positive?

Well for me this transfer window has seen the best period of squad development since, and dare I say this, but since SH took over our club and set us on the journey of turning Cardiff City into a club capable of reaching it's potential.

This morning we have not just our biggest squad in terms of numbers but, again since the SH days, a squad of quality players where the vast majority would command decent transfer fees. With the younger players if they can reach their potential then transfer fees well in excess of what we paid for them.

It is debateable if we have the best squad in the Championship but in my opinion there is no doubt that we have one of the best squads and like all fans I hope this squad reaches it's potential. If it does then I believe this will be the season where our dreams are delivered and we get promoted.

But signing Nicky Maynard last night has me buzzing because now we have a player, proven at this level, with the ability to score 20+ goals in a season. Add to that the experience of Bellamy, Smith and Helguson and the potential of Mason and Velikonja and compared to last season we have taken a huge step forward.

Last season we had the 2nd highest number of attempts on goal since our return to the Championship but sadly our conversion rate of attempts at goal to goals was the second lowest. In my opinion that won't happen this season and that's what excites me most about this season.

Great job by MM during this transfer window which has resulted in my opinion in us being in our strongest position for years.

Well the back 4 picks itself unless Ben Turner is still unfit and then Connolly will play. I think we have a different game against Wolves than we did against Huddersfield because Wolves will fancy winning and Huddersfield parked the bus.

Huddersfield still managed to open us up easily at times as did Bristol City so in my opinion playing Whiits, Gunnarsson and Mutch leaves us light weight covering in front of our back 4. I would replace Mutch with Kiss and make sure he sits and protects our back 4.

I was down the stadium yesterday and in the shop they were printing the shirts of Noone, Conway and Kim so perm any 2 from them 3. That for me leaves Maynard up front by himself so 4-5-1 for me.

With the likes of Mason, Velikonja, Mutch, Cowie, Helguson and one of Noone, Conway and Kim MM has a wealth of talent and options to pick from allowing him to go 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 or 4-4-1-1.

Keep to 4-5-1 for me but tighten up on how we protect the back 4 with Kiss or even Cowie sitting in front of them.

we need to play a variable formation depending on whether we are attacking/defending! Should keep Wolves on their toes as well. :ayatollah:

Today, I'd probably go with:

......................Marshall......................
......................................................
Kev........Hudson.......Turner...........Taylor
......................................................
.....................Gunnarsson....................
Smith........................................Noone
.......................Whitts........................
...........Helguson.................................
.............................Maynard................

Subs: Kim, Velikonja, Connelly(*) Cowie, Lewis, Ralls, Mason

On Sky they mentioned that Fulham had put in a cheeky bid for him last week

To be honest ,even if you have the best squad in terms of quality, it don't always work out if they don't Gel and click.
But I believe the squad that Malky has brought together is one of the best and from go on yesterdays performance, if we haven't clicked and gelled yet, which I don't believed we have, God help any team that comes up against us when we have fully clicked and gelled together .
That team has only been with each other for a few days, and you can already see the understanding start to develop.
Makly and his trainers, now has to fine tune them ,and once we hit top gear, god help any team that isn't on form and comes up against us. I believe we are going to see some poor team on the end of a real thrashing of us be for too long, and all teams coming to the CCS will be shitting them self s and with the backing of the fans ,it wont be like we are the 12 man, teams are going to stop and count or team on the field thinking that are playing 15. WE ARE ON OUR WAY, So practice hard Swansea, we will be playing you next season in the prem, if your still there, which I must be honest and say, I hope you are. GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE WELSH TEAMS !! :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Great win but it will get tougher as teams will "park the bus" as has been said. If they try to attack city can rip them apart on the break. So MM needs to change tactics continually to outwit the opposition.
What a nice feeling watching a team with great attacking options that can excite the fans.
