Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay bemoaned individual errors as Cardiff City were sunk at Ashton Gate.

The Bluebirds had kept clean sheets in their previous two league games but they could not keep Bristol City at bay in this lunchtime Severnside derby.

Bristol City 4-2 Cardiff City: Read our match report

“We gave really poor goals away,” said Mackay.

“I’m not taking anything away from Bristol City’s performance but we gave away bad balls in poor areas and that’s certainly not like us.

“If you give the ball away in poor areas you are going to be punished by good teams.

“I’ve told the players we have to stop making basic errors and it’s not something that’s been regular from my team defensively.

“We’ve been tight as a team invariably but you have days like that when you give away ball between your 18-yard line and the halfway line.

“But it’s not a defensive thing, it’s individual errors that lead to goals.

“We’ll go through that on Tuesday and see where the goals have come from and learn from it. “They’re not trying to do it on purpose but we’ve got to learn in situations like that.

“When players are below par you can carry one or two, but when you have three or four in the same team you’re up against it, especially in this league.

Mackay’s disappointment was the more marked given the fact that Cardiff also looked dangerous in the second half, substitute Joe Mason and Heidar Helguson breathing new hope into the Bluebirds after being 2-0 and 3-1 down.

“I always felt when we went forward we were going to create problems,” he said.

“We hit the bar at 1-0 down with a header from a corner and lost the goal on half-time.

“I felt we started sprightly in the second half and got the goal back.

“We looked to go and get the equaliser and, then at 3-1, we got another one and had another great couple of chances around their box.

“But ultimately we’ve got to make sure we take them at one end and stop them going in at the other.”

Both Matthew Connolly and Tommy Smith made debuts and Mackay was delighted with their performances.

“They both did well considering their lack of game time,” he said.

“It’s exactly why I bought them. Tommy got into a couple of great positions in the first half and if he catches a couple of those shots better, which I’ve seen him do, they both go in.”

“Barring a misplaced pass for the fourth goal Connolly had an excellent debut.”

Very simple answer get players in who can challenge for places, connelly is a good signing imo, but then who else have we got other than DK and youngster's ?

Never mind the players, time to get a new Manager - because everyone worked us out and the only 1 who can't see it is Malky .Buy hey has Malky he does the Ayatollah and wave his arms about he's on and the Man.

 Not in defence, which is without doubt our weakest area

you can play any formation in the world but if you give the ball away in midfield and defend poorly then your going to get punished
what worries me was bristol are average at best but were much better than us yesterday
im hoping malky will shuffle things around to accomodate kim starting at home against wolves

I think MM thought he was ok for defensive options but yesterday clearly showed we are not, & it was a bad decision to start Connolly imo he can't be match fit, MM should've started with Keinan.. why Blake was allowed to leave??

Two errors by Hudson two goals, then we`re on catch up, Hudson giving the ball away and ball watching not decisive enough ! He had a shocker yesterday in my opinion ! We need another defender to challenge for his position. Every time Bristol city attacked they looked like scoring.

as someone said, without 2 man of the match performances from marshall, we would of lost all 3 league games, not forgeting our loss to northampton. malky playing a lone srtiker without even mason starting, we not only loook like wrexham, we will be playing with them in a few years :( :(

he seemed to be lost by not having ben turner next to him, centre backs who play regularly with each other liken their partnership to a marriage, they know each other inside out,
im pretty sure that buisness will resume against wolves, turner and hudson are one of the better centre back pairs in the league in my opinion

Of course malky should take some responsibility he picks the team and enforces the tactics
However you cant deny that our main downfall yesterday was a sloppy disorganised midfield and defensive play by normally reliable players
you could have jose mourinho picking a side but if players dont play how they should and make ridiculous mistakes then your going to always lose football matches
Their is a squad of players that should be kicking themselves now,not just malky

So what happens if Ben Turner is out long term ! Seems to me we can`t depend on Hudson`s play !

he looked lost without turner he really did, felt a bit sorry for connolly as he was chucked in the deep e nd. however someone reminded me that keinan made his debut against the jacks and played very well.I dont think the israeli is the answer his head seems to have gone down after being left out of the side for so long
now if only MM would have faith in darcy blake at centre back................. oops

Its easy for MM to blame the defence because the goals were mistakes.. just another way out for MM.
