Hornet fans view on Helguson and Smith signings

Sat Aug 25, 2012 7:03 pm

Hey guys,

Havnt checked in recently, so thought I would drop by to give my two pence worth on these lads. Both are regarded by our lot as true watford boys, absolutely bags on enthusiasm if not the most talented. As a result of their great work rate many watford fans would welcome them back any day of the week.

However, and yes there is a however unfortunately, age is most definitely not on their side any more. Heidar is well and truly getting on and I would be surprised if he plays every game for you this season, he would be absolutely knackered by christmas if not nursed through the season. Smithy is slightly younger and pace was never a particularly important part of his game anyway. He always had an uncanny knack to be able to buy himself an extra yard or two of space when it was important. In this respect I think Smith can still do a job in this league.

If I'm totally honest I don't think these two signings are really going to be good enough to propel you to the premiership and I am kind of surprised that Malky has not gone for some bigger names in the squad. Mutch is a good signing too, but he has not been the same since his serious injury last season. If Malky can get the team playing then on certain days you will annihilate opposition, but from an outsiders perspective I certainly would not class your current squad as favourites for the title.

Out of interest did any of you catch our demolition of Birmingham tonight? That first half display was some of the most sensational passing football I've ever seen from a watford side. Still only hoping for top half though.

Didnt see the game switched over after it finished and they said your first half display was outstanding where you that good or where brum poor?

smiths a class act and his experience will benefit the team without a doubt
incidentaly hornet i genuinely consider watford to have a good chance of making the play offs, zola is very underrated as a manager,i dont think he got a fair go at west ham
its always good to hear from a rival supporter who doesnt resort to petty jibes and insults like others on here
good times ahead for watford :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

well i hope so haha, but im prepared to give him a couple of seasons to get the ship in order. played some brilliant football today, although not afraid to put a boot through it when in trouble at the back.

anyway i truly wish smith and heidar the best of luck at cardiff, however i don't think they will drastically alter your promotion chances. bellamy however is a different kettle of fish, the thing is how often will he be fit enough to play 2 games a week?

Yea I watched your game. First half you were very impressive, I was actually quite shocked, but then Birmingham woke up for about 15-20 mins at the start of the second and then the game closed its self down a little.

Interesting views on our new players, but i can't help but agree with your final analysis.

We still lack pace, we still have a dodgy defence, & the tactics favouerd by MM are clearly not working,,,but hey, early days yet.

i would say brum had a poor day, but tbh im certainly not convinced by there manager or tactics. they clearly have some good players in that squad, for example darren ambrose is our bogey player. he always seems to bang them in against us, but today he touched the ball about four or five times before being subbed.

really i would say it was an excellent first half display coupled with a birmingham side who were slow to start and lost the game as a result. they never looked like scoring. zigic and king up front were crap.

in the second half we sat back and managed the game, but i never felt that we looked like we were going to concede. almunia had so little to do that he was sat around crafting a daisy chain for gianfranco.

Yes I'm not sure about Clark either time will tell strange how Huddersfield sacked him. That zigic does not want to be there that is plain to see.

exactly early days, needs to be given time. im not sure a 4-5-1 will work and i have to say i am surprised with the way he seems to manage you bearing in mind with us he played two strikers and two wingers the whole time. we scored hatfuls and conceded slightly smaller hatfuls.

yes i also wonder if clark would have been better off staying put. the birmingham job is certainly a rough one. zigic is terrible, almost an anti-footballer.

Interesting comments, Hornets Fan. Not sure what to make of Helgesson, but Tommy Smith had a good game today. Caught the last quarter of an hour of the Watford game, and you were coasting. Long, hard season coming up!
