Malky praises Bluebirds defensive strength

Tue Aug 21, 2012 11:14 pm

BLUEBIRDS boss Malky Mackay praised his side’s defensive resilience after stalemate on the south coast.

Cardiff City picked up a useful point as they kept a second successive clean sheet to frustrate their Brighton hosts.

“We have kept back-to-back clean sheets and we are certainly happy with that,” said Mackay as City settle into sixth place in the embryonic Championship table.

“Brighton are a quality team but we restricted them to five shots on target.

“We missed two chances from three yards – Heidar Helguson and Etien Velikonja both going close to scoring – but we kept the ball really well and that part of our game got better and better.

David Marshall: Man of the match again. Overworked but in top form, though fortunate when Brunos shot hit his standing leg and flew away for corner.

“It was an entertaining match and a draw was probably a fair result.”

Midfielder Jordon Mutch went off at half-time after suffering a knock to the top of a foot, a blow for the summer signing who had missed games in pre-season through injury.

Mackay said: “That was a pity because Jordon was playing really well.

“He made some good runs and looked dangerous when he went forward.

“We will assess him over the rest of this week before making any decisions about whether he will be ready for Bristol City on Saturday.

“Joe Mason took over and he played really well, he is such an exciting talent.

“We have to keep striving to improve our consistency as the season progresses.”

Craig Bellamy went off in the final 20 minutes but Mackay confirmed he will be available for the weekend.

Brighton are still without a league goal this season and Seagulls boss Gus Poyet moaned: “I need a striker, somebody who can put the ball in the net when we create chances.

“But we are not close enough to securing the striker we need.

“It was an excellent team display but we need the spark from an attacking player who can make the difference.

“Cardiff are a strong team. They have power in the air and their delivery from corners and free-kicks is first class.

“They have players who can shoot and score from 40 yards and they are dangerous opponents.

“They know how to play these matches and there was a moment when they knew they would not lose this game.

“They have quality and the know-how.”

Nice quote from Poyet, if our fans only felt half as positive about our team....

slow and steady wins the race! stay consistent with home wins and away draws/wins and we'll be up there!... our defence looks steady, just lacking the goals which will come with the quality we got! there's no
point scoring goals if you can't stop the other team scoring! :ayatollah:

we were defensivly sound last season, only 9 defeats all season.. but it says it all when we have played 2 games and our keeper was m.o.m. for both... we are still lacking that cutting edge and need to create more chances and convert them...

4 pts so far is superb and everybody would have taken that, but the onfield performances have not been great...

Blackwood Bluebird - no the performances havent been brillant, but its only the 2nd game of season. Uve been quite negative recently with some of the posts i seen u post, have faith in this team. We still have kim to come, maybe smith and hopefully another striker which to me means we are goin for it this year. it mite take up to ten games to really get goin but if we are grinding out wins at home, and draws away in that ten games then ill be one happy supporter. Then go and show the rest of the league we mean business after those ten games :ayatollah:

reading were "out of it" untill about december, just goes to show it really is a marathon not a sprint. To get promoted i feel we are going to need two more players in august, followed by two quality players in jan

liam, i think kim may well be what we are craving, skill, pace and width.. but i havnt seen anything any different in the way we have set up since early jan. its still hudson or turner knocking long diagonal balls up to previously miller and now helguson...

you are right it is only the 2nd game of the season and im well chuffed with 4pts, but as a paying fan for 20yrs now i want to be entertained, we have the quality to do so, but the way we set up is not allowing us to hit our full potential!

If he had seen every game this year a purist like Poyet would be moaning about us to!!!
