we have problems

Sat Aug 18, 2012 9:35 am

and this is not knee jerking. It's the same problems as the last 12 months+

Full backs aren't good enough. Taylor can't defend, Forest Gump on the other side just keeps running but has the end product of 7 sprinters in a race with Usain Bolt.

Hudson & Turner are solid but can't pass water which is why Whitts comes so deep & is really inaffectual.

Cowie works his socks off but is wasted out wide. Why Conway didn't play is beyond me.

Then we have the age old problem of teams coming down & putting 10 behind the ball as they found out a couple of seasons ago we struggle to get behind a sold 4-5-1.

We play two up front and we get murdered in midfield as Whitts isn't strong enough to play alongside someone when we are up against a 5 man midfield.

Yet when we play 1 up top the middle just seems so congested that the ball is played from side to side in front of the opposition midfield who allow us to do it - then you know what happens next - Turner or Hudson get bored as we are not dragging the opposition out of their formation, so try and pick out our wide players from 60 yards out (and fail) or try and hit Helgusson from 60 yards out (and fail!).

I don't know what the answers are. We have a squad of players that look stronger than last season. But tactics that haven't differed. And the eternal dilemma - how do we get around the back of solid 4-5-1 formations??

We got out of jail last night. We won't do that every week.

I like the 4 - 5 - 1 formation.

But to make it work you need speed and width on the flanks making it a swift 4 - 3 - 3 when attacking.
Cowie has neither as he always cuts inside.

Why Conway didn't start and why it took 80 minutes for Malky to realise a change was needed is totally beyond me?

Also amazed that Helguson played 90 minutes. Was Etien injured?

I love super Kev but he isn't an attacking fullback. Awesome defender on his day but no quality at the other end. I hope we strengthen in that area and I'm also looking forward to seeing Kim. But it's one game and we will get better so no panic from me just yet :ayatollah:
