A Huddersfield Town fans Perspective!

Sat Aug 18, 2012 5:49 am

Firstly, I didn't attend the game but was able to watch the whole affair Live on Sky. I hate doing that because somehow it feels worse than listening to radio commentary but I suppose it was the next best thing to actually being there.

When news filtered through that Jordan Rhodes was sidelined through injury I have to confess my heart sank. He doesn't dictate how we play necessarily more that he has the knack of being in the right place at the right time. His absence therefore was a massive blow!

However, as the game unfolded it became clear that we weren't just there as mere cannon fodder. To be honest, the first half was something of a stalemate with the Terriers creating at least one decent chance, that Arfield managed to squander, but I thought we more than held our own. At half time I was left thinking Jordan would have buried that missed chance.

The second half was a much better game of football, in which I thought we showed that we can defend and get men behind the ball. We kept our shape pretty well and restricted you to just a few half chances. Jack Hunt had a great game coming from deep positions on the right-side, made more impressive by also keeping Bellamy in check when he had to defend. As the half entered the final quarter I could sense your fans were becoming very frustrated not least by some robust tackling by our midfield. That aspect of our game was sadly missing last season, we gave the ball away cheaply and didn't work hard enough to retrieve it, so although your fans were annoyed I was actually pleased to see us showing more resilience in that area of play. Another fairly easy chance went begging to Arfield and I was left thinking we'd never score. Up until that point I was very pleased with our overall performance and thought we deserved at least a point.

Then came the defensive 'turn off' at the death. I think one of the TV commentators, or was it Simon Grayson said we'll score a 91st minute winner ourselves at some point this season so lets not get too upset. But when you've played fairly well and held one of the strongly fancied teams on their own patch for 90+ minutes to lose it at the death was a sickener and no mistake!

I'm sure you'll have a great season, even more so once your new players 'bed-in', you'll have more cohesion about your play and be up there! Right now you're top of the pile and we're propping everyone up! Funny old game football 'init?' I expect all Terriers fans were left pondering if Jordan had been on the pitch he would have converted at least one of those chances but hey ho!...we'll fight again! :ayatollah:

Huddersfield played well last night and deserved at lead a point and probably 3 based on the chances created. Its fair to say that we did not play well at all.

After your display last night you should have a decent season. Grayson has brought in some Championship experience into your team and you still have Rhodes. You sat back and it looked as if you came to Cardiff to get the point. As the game went on your confidence grew and Huddersfield created the best chances. If it wasn't for Marshall you could have won the game by 2 or 3 goals.

Enjoy the season ahead.

Thanks for the balanced post mate, you were pretty unlucky last night, and we were fortunate to ride our luck and seal the win. You would think reading possibly the majority of posts on both our message boards that we had been stuffed last night, not won a very difficult game, under the circumstances! but hey, we are going to have to deal with the negative posts from the disaffected few for a while longer.

Good luck for the rest of the season and here's hoping you stay up :ayatollah:

Good job we have a fine keeper that is doing what he's supposed to do then eh mate ? I.e saving goals from going in! How lucky is that eh. Your negativity will soon change, keep the faith and support the boys :ayatollah:

To be honest I didn't enjoy the game much! Not just because of the late goal meant a defeat we hardly deserved but mainly because I didn't know what to expect and felt very nervous throughout.

I've not been to any pre-season games (I gave that up some years ago) so I really had no idea how we'd shape up against what was from our point of view a very strong Cardiff City team.

I was pleased with our performance in fact! We also had a lot of new faces in our team so I guess that means we can only improve. Although there's no such thing as one man team when Jordan's fit again I reckon we'll do okay!

Thanks for all the good wishes on here and hope to see you all at our place at some point!

Have to agree that you out played and out thought us for a lot of the game and our keeper was MOM. I predicted a tough game with a narrow win for us and I am sure you will have a decent season if you continue to play like that.

It was nowhere near as entertaining as last years Carling Cup game but I guess there was a lot more at stake this time. As for us - lots of mistakes, no creativity and a negative formation at home. After tearing Newcastle apart last week, I think all of those who were at that game were surprised by last nights team and tactics. However, its three points and a winning start and I guess thats all you can ask for.

I think Simon Grayson will be a very good manager for you. As I saw it, he came to defend and frustrate the opponents and that worked until we scored. Watch out for that boy Gerrard mind, thinks he is better than he actually is and has a seemingly poor attitude at times. However on his day with the right attitude can be one on the best players in the division.

I agree with Bridgend Bluebird.....Marshall made some important saves frankly that kept us in it.

However although we didnt play well, to play as nervy as we did with no real potency to take a win will suit me. :ayatollah:

The fact our keeper was motm says you deserved at least a point, but we will play a lot better than that and get beat, so as you know football is a funny old game, good luck for the season (except feb 9th) you will do ok ;)

Thats a fair summing up ofthe game. Nice to hear a balance dview from opposition fans.

Liked the "robust "bit. Southern lucky not to get red, which would have been deserved.

But we are top of the league, and I am sure Huddersfield with more performances like that will not stay bottom for long.

Yes, you noticed that as well!

Early days yet mate! Like you, we still have to bed our new players in and Jordan would have scored at least two of those chances we created last night - brilliant keeper or not!

Pretty much agree with all that. Thought the ref was poor and let too much go but then I may be biased ;)
Draw probably a fair result in what was generally a poor game but they're our points now and we re keeping them :D
Good luck for the rest of the season apart from the return fixture :ayatollah:

Thanks - its good to have someone on here who appreciates your own team and can give a balanced view , some of our lot on here couldnt be grateful if we won 4 nil - make me sick sometimes

anyway it takes up to 5 competitive matches for team to gel plus we have few more players to come into squad .

Youll do well your side looks well balanced plus Rhodes will be back - good luck for the seaon ahead :ayatollah:

Re: A Huddersfield Town fans Perspective!

Good write up AceT, fair play.

I honestly felt that the ref was annoyingly inconsistent - for both sides, not just us. There was also an "assistant referee," on the side of the pitch that your fans were, who was equally incompetent. Is it just my impression, or do they get less involved now since we stopped calling them "linesmen?"

Over recent seasons, the teams who come up from League One seem to take a lot of teams by surprise, at the beginning of the season at least. This is partly due to the fact that they are more physical in their approach than the longstanding Championship teams. Prime example of that was when we played Brighton at home in the early part of last season - they embarrassed us.

You'll need to be ruthless up front (unlike us last season) and maybe Jordan Rhodes won't be enough, if he can't play every game. Push Mr Grayson for some more strike power, if you can.

We "won ugly" last night and I was talking to people on the train home and we all agreed we'll take that every now and again but we also expect some good performances from our team this season. We seemed to be weak attacking down our right and Bellamy was given extra attention down our left, without sufficient support from his teammates at times. We will definitely play better than that this season, yet here we are with the 3 points, so I can't be too critical. I'm really looking forward to seeing Kim Bo Kyung in this side, because I was impressed by what I saw of him in the Olympics and I'm sure he'll liven things up.

Good luck for the season. On last night's performance, the Terriers will secure mid-table obscurity at the very least.

Cheers mate! :ayatollah:

Just on my way to 'the local' for a few beers then watch the Leeds Utd v Wolves game on Sky. I live less than two miles from Elland Road so there should be few of them having a pre-match pint. They're decent lads, unlike a lot of theirs! They still can't stop themselves with the 'we're massive' shite all the same. I've heard just about every jibe in the book from these lads in fact but it is just banter.

I don't think our transfer dealings are done yet either and there's loads of rumours to whet the appetite! Personally I think we need another forward to partner/take the weight off Rhodes and maybe another wide player. Unfortunately Danny Ward is injured and I think we missed him last night!

Going to be interesting to see how two other fancied teams fair this lunch time! ;)

We'll get better...no doubt about that. As well as you played you were not as good as Brighton and Southampton were last season following their promotion season. Having said that Jordon Rhodes will win you tight games but this is going to be a very tough league this season. To get in the top 10 you will have done very well. All the best. :ayatollah:

Huddersfield, in my opinion, will be a top 10 side and possibly higher. Norwood and Novak were immense and Huddersfield were unlucky not to win the game never mind go home with nothing.

As I live in Wigan the Galpharn Stadium is on my schedule this season, I do Sports Photography for the newspapers, and Im looking forward to attending a few games - especially with performances like that.
