Malky was culpable tonight!!!

Fri Aug 17, 2012 10:15 pm

Before anybody want's to point out that this is the first game of the season or point the fact that there were a few debutants or even our build up was disrupted by the mid-week internationals, that is complete bollocks.

We were shite today and for the first time really I place much of the blame on Malky's shoulders. Firstly tacticly, 4-5-1 @ home, what is that about? I am fully aware that 4-4-2 is increasingly becoming dated and you risk losing the midfield battle but f**k it, I'd rather have a go than just be hard to beat.

o I have no idea what use/advantage Turner's long diagonal balls provide, just gifts possesion to the opposition it seems.

o Whittingham is not effective as a deeplying playmaker, I lost count of the ammount of times he was stood next to the CB's tonight. He's our most talented player but it's wasted playing so deep, get Jordon Mutch to play there (who I though was one of the very few positives on display tonight).

o As for Cowie's role, can somebody please explain to me what purpose it serves having a 'winger' drifting into CM all the time. I can't fault Cowie's commitment and endevour but he is so clearly not a wide player.

o Finally, the most frustrating part of all is we have so many players who are good on the ball and are technically gifted in their own right, so why have we straight away decided to play long balls to Helguson?

As much as I blame the above players for not performing, I also blame Malky, clearly these are his tactical decisions because most of the above problems existed last season (just swapped Miller for Helguson).

I am a huge Malky fan but am pissed of tonight, its great to win football matches but I want to be entertained. Is that too much to ask!?!?!

Didn't help when Hudson and Turner had the ball, there wasn't much movement upfront for them to play the ball. If they tried to play it across and wait for the opening, people booed. We played 4-5-1 a lot at home last season, but can see us going 4-4-1-1 when Mason is fit :ayatollah:

Yes we won, but are you satisfied with just that? I want to be entertained, winning isn't everything. I've just stated why I am pissed off and no three points is going to change that.

So being entertained gets us the three points?

Were you entertained tonight? Did you enjoy the football we played? I didn't and that should be as equally important as the result IMO. Fair enough if the points are the priority for you but I personally think there's something not right with that. Football shouldn't be just result's orientated.

i thought the performance was fairly decent tonight tbh Sean. I didnt think the referee was upto much as Helguson was turned down for a stonewall penalty and also the Huddersfield CB's were pushing him in the back to win headers and generally just kicking him...all going un-noticed by the officials.

I do agree that the way Hudson and Turner hoof it up field is something that needs to be cut out. Maybe that is the reason Bellamy was virtually non-existant in the 2nd half and Cowie was drifting infield. 2 quick wide men there, so play it along the flanks :ayatollah:

also thought Mason did very well when introduced. also would have liked to see Velikonja introduced to add something different. all in all though, 3 points in the bag and bring on Brighton :ayatollah:

Huddersfield came here and done the job they wanted to, only thing they didn't get was any points, they worked well defensively and attacking, they edged it slightly and with Marshall keeping us in the game was a huge boost, I do like to be entertained but at the end of the day TG and VT don't demand fancy displays, they demand points on the board

My biggest point to my intial rant is I'm pissed off with both the team and Mackay because I know they can be so much better than that. There is so much potential in this team, it shouldn't be wasted. The biggest example of this is with Whittingham, when you have a player who has so much talent, a match winner, why waste him playing so deep.

Lessons need to be learnt, if they are then we could be in for an exciting season :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Having five in midfield is not the problem. Having Cowie out wide is a Problem. Having Whitts playing to deep is a Problem. Leaving Conway on the bench is a problem.

As i said in another thread Craig five in midfield is not a problem. The players he picked was all wrong. COWIE OUT OF POSITION WHITTS PLAYING TO DEEP. Why ? Why leave Conway out ?

We didnt play well but we won

Thats it.

Ok cool so everybody should go about the forum with such things called threads with the headline such as WE WON and inside that thread it says WE WON HIP HIP HOORAY and thats it then, but only when we lose the thread headline is WE LOST and WE WAS BAD TONIGHT in the thread then thats the end of them threads they should get locked  . Anything more on a game that people write down such as details of what they watched it seems people start telling others how negative they are and the Op is told to f**k off and watch another team its nuts on here. :ayatollah:

Whats nuts is on the first day of the season, we win and people are complaining. Its insane.

Agreed totally with you, It took their goalie until 70 mins to make his first save I think whilst Marshall was my man of the match tonight :o

Mason looked dangerous when he came on foor the last 10 minutes.
Whitts need to be playing forward to provide the passes for our strikers or striker!!!
Bellamy needs a free role in the side as well, as I think he is always cornered when playing out wide as teams sometimes target him from playing.

Most important thing is 3 points tonight when was always going to be a difficult fixture.
I still think we need strengthening at the back and midfield :ayatollah:

I agree it wasn't the best performance but I think you've been a little dramatic. We've won our first game which build confidence and with that will come better football. :ayatollah:

Some of it may sound dramatic. I certainly don't think my analysis of certain players and their respective roles is though because this isn't based on just today, the problems we had last season have shown up straight away this season. I'm just trying to point out that changes have to be made by Mackay and I was dissappointed to see we making the same tactical mistakes as last season.

Re: Malky was culpable tonight!!!

Problem is Whitts is not mobile enough to play further up the pitch. He needs space and wasnt granted that tonight

Re: Malky was culpable tonight!!!

Sat Aug 18, 2012 12:55 am

I can understand this.
Cowie is a central player and people don't realise that.
Conway was the best in pre season and if Helguson is going to get goals then Conay should start because his crosses are lethal if their low across the floor or in the air.
Mutch and Gunnarsson should be in defensive midfield together and Whittingham should be in front more attacking and in a free role where he can create things where Bellamy and Conway/Kimbo can help Helguson or Velikonja get the service to get goals. :ayatollah:
