Cardiff City's Championship season kicks off this evening at Cardiff City Stadium against Huddersfield Town.
Liam Jones previews the fixture.
Huddersfield TownThe newly promoted Terriers arrive at Cardiff City Stadium with manager Simon Grayson wanting to bounce back after a round one Capital One Cup defeat on Tuesday to Preston.
With defender Antony Kay's departure coinciding with the arrival of former Bluebird Anthony Gerrard, Huddersfield's new look defence will be on test. Star striker Jordan Rhodes has been subject to interest from league rivals Blackburn Rovers, having scored forty goals League One and eight at international level last season.
Huddersfield will probably field new signing Sean Scannell, a player Malky Mackay will know well from previous encounters. Grayson talked of Scannell as, "an exciting, young, talented footballer who is very adaptable. He can play on either wing or just off the striker - he offers great options".
Town have another well known Cardiff opponent in Keith Southern, a signing from Blackpool who played in the midfield against Cardiff in the 2010 play off final at Wembley.
Key PlayersThe name that seems to be popping up everywhere at the moment is
Jordan Rhodes. Huddersfield are confident of being able to retain the striker, having reportedly turned down a four million pound bid from Blackburn of late.
Notable signings have included, midfielder
Adam Clayton from Leeds United,
Oliver Norwood, an ex Manchester United midfielder who left the Red Devils in favour of The Terriers and
Paul Dixon, a signing from Dundee United who has previously spent his entire career in Scotland.
Huddersfield have clearly issued a statement of intent by so far keeping Rhodes, and will be looking to make their mark on the Championship this season. Of course, ex-City defender
Anthony Gerrard will return to CCS and may feel he has a point to prove to City fans.
Last TimeThe last time the two sides met was a year ago in a Carling Cup second round tie - it was a game that ended 5-3 to the Bluebirds after extra time. Craig Conway and Don Cowie netted in extra time, bettering good work from Jordan Rhodes who had beaten Tom Heaton twice.
