Anthony Gerrard Has Nothing To Prove!

Fri Aug 17, 2012 10:05 am

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN new signing Anthony Gerrard insists he has nothing to prove to former manager Malky Mackay ahead of tonight’s return to former club Cardiff City.

The 26-year-old joined the Terriers last week in a £350,000 deal and, by a strange quirk of the fixture list, is in line to make his Championship debut against the Bluebirds.

To some, such a quick reunion would be difficult and full of mixed emotions.

To Gerrard, however, the opening game of the Football League season is only special because it represents the defender’s Championship debut for Huddersfield.

“I had the same thing when I joined Hull (on loan in 2010) as my first game was against Cardiff,” the Liverpudlian told the Yorkshire Post. “So, I am used to it.

“It wasn’t difficult for me as once I sign for a club then that’s it. My allegiances are gone. I don’t owe them anything. I am a Huddersfield Town player and will be doing my utmost to win.”

Gerrard’s cutting of emotional ties with Cardiff can perhaps be put down to the less than amicable parting of the ways that the defender had with manager Mackay.

He explained: “I didn’t play too many games last season, to be honest. Twenty-seven is not enough. It is fairly poor for me as I usually play 40-odd games. That is what I have been used to since I was 19.

“To go from that to being dropped for no particular reason and not included in squads, it was a bit of a bitter pill to swallow. So, I needed a change. I’d made my mind up early on because there is no point in working with someone that you get nothing back from.

“Managers have their opinions and they are the ones that pick the team. It was one of those things. You don’t have to accept it but you do have to get your head down and do your best. I did that for Cardiff whenever I pulled the shirt on.

“But if a manager doesn’t like you, it doesn’t matter if you play well or have an indifferent game. There is nothing there for you.

“Anyway, I don’t care about their manager. I am only interested in myself and Huddersfield Town. I don’t have to prove my point to him, just myself. I know I was capable of playing in that team. It is not about him, it is about me.

“I went back to Cardiff (in the summer of 2011 after a year at Hull) with the best intentions. But the way football is, sometimes things don’t pan out the way you expect.

“A manager can take a dislike to you for some particular reason, which was unknown to me.

“But that is football. I have come to a fantastic club that is going in the right direction.”

Huddersfield fans will be hoping Gerrard can rediscover the form that saw the defender named Player of the Year during his one season at the KC Stadium.

“I enjoyed my year at Hull,” said Gerrard, who made 41 appearances for the Tigers after joining in a loan deal that saw Seyi Olofinjana move in the opposite direction.

“I set myself standards and hit them.

“Now, I want to re-establish myself as one of the best centre-halves in the league. A lot of people know what I am capable of and that is why the manager brought me here. I want to get back to playing with confidence.”

Tonight will bring to an end Huddersfield’s 11-year absence from the second tier as Simon Grayson’s side take on one of the pre-season favourites for promotion.

It will be a tough test, especially with Cardiff desperate to go one better after qualifying for the play-offs in each of the last three seasons but not being able to take the final step to the Premier League.

Gerrard said: “The Championship will be very competitive again. People say you need to consolidate coming into a new division but I don’t believe that. I am not here for that. I don’t want to just sit in mid-table obscurity.

“If you don’t strive to achieve things then you go backwards. Norwich and Southampton both went up again. Blackpool also did well a few years ago and pushed on to the Premier League. It can be done. There is nothing to be frightened of in the Championship.

“The lads should take a lot of heart from what they achieved last season. It is no mean feat to get out of a league and the way they did it was exceptional. I’ve had the bad side of the play-offs so, hopefully, we can go one step further.”

Funny how he says he doesn't care about our manager yet spends half the interview blabbering on about him. He's going to be our most valuable player tonight is Gerrard! :D

The last time he played against us was for Hull 2 seasons ago and we won 2-0 :D , so the same result tonight would go down a treat!

He does sound a bit bitter and twisted though, "Nobody likes me!" :) :ayatollah:
