The Transit Van Appreciation Thread

Tue Aug 14, 2012 9:15 pm

Some of my best away days in the 90's were spent travelling to away games in the back of a transit van. Post stories of your favourite trips where the transit was the mode of transport of choice. I have loads of tails but suffering from writers block. Maybe your stories will inspire me to tell all and reminisce..........

Wasn't on on the scene until 93 but remember returning from Preston for a night in Blackpool and pulling up outside the Tower Lounge in Blackpool where 14 drunkards piled out of the back of the van, ages ranging from 16 to 40. The look on the face of the bouncers was priceless. At least I think it was, memory not the best ;)

The Famous trip to Scunthorpe in 93 was one of my most memorable trips , every pull in on the M5 and M6 was Transits parked up with City Fans having a Piss doing the Ayatollah .. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Many a transit driver has incurred 3 points on his license for allowing pissed up fans to disembark on the approach to the motorway for a piss. It was a favourite tactic to leave at the junction, go straight on and pull over on the slip road prior to rejoining the motorway.

Agreed Mozzer. Without getting involved in a debate about 'Modern Football' and risking being accused of being a neanderthal thug, let’s just say that these were some of the best days of my life and the memories will last a lifetime. :ayatollah:

Mansfield away last game of the season, forget which year, was a classic. It was the season when we went in the home end as we took far more fans than tickets were allocated for. Must have had about 12 –14 in the back of the van. A collection of reprobates from the Ebbw and Rhondda valleys and some folk from Newport.

Blotto by about 10am and put remember being chased by dog handlers into the back of the van at the end of the game. The stragglers loosing the seat of their trousers to the Alsatians.

Never mind mate
I remember a conversation with Northampton police in the play off semi final where a copper asked "oi taff, where do you think your going". "back to our car" we replied. "What 8 of you" he asked". "ok officer it's actually a transit van"

my first away game was in a transit van, rotherham united 1981/82 season i was 14 at the time.was meant to go by coach, getting picked up on newport road with scarf in hand.a transit van pulled up and offered us a lift for three quid cheaper so me and my mate jumped on board.im sure the driver was called billy from cwmbran and i know that was first meeting of alan rawlings.at one point i didn't think i make it home, when a couple of hundred fans chasing you screaming for your blood and the f*cking driver asks do you want to stop boys :o

Where to start:

Wolves away (the 4-1 game) brand new transit returned with no windscreen or side window......Lost deposit.....

Burnley away (same season I think) Luton van, hitch hiker picked up without knowing that there were 15 nut jobs in the back, his face when he saw the loons in question in the there, nervously smiled.....and said I'm Welsh boys, I'm from Swansea....whoops.....well known lad starts unbuckling his jeans.....

Reversing along the motorway after missing a junction......Huddersfield away.....I think

Three crashes before even leaving Cardiff.....Bury.....I think......It was always going to be a long day...

We used to have a van up most away games from Roath/ Cathays, I think in the end we were banned from most rental companies, one of which took offence to people standing on the tip of a Luton van while travelling along City Road (Doncaster away.....I think) late one Saturday evening, what was the chances of the rental company owner spotting that .
