AIDY BOOTHROYD accepts Cardiff City will provide a severe test for his Cobblers side tonight despite being without almost an entire team through international call-ups and injuries.
Town begin their season with a Capital One Cup fixture and they could not have had a more difficult draw, facing a team who reached the final last season and took eventual winners Liverpool all the way to penalties.
Since then, they have only got stronger, adding former Manchester City and Celtic striker Craig Bellamy from the Reds to an already impressive list of talent.
They have been in devastating form in their warm-up matches, winning four on the bounce and putting four past Newcastle United in a comprehensive friendly victory on Saturday.
And although a round of midweek international games means their line-up for the game at Sixfields will not be as star-studded as it might have been, they will still have enough firepower to cause Boothroyd some serious concerns.
“I always worry when people talk about players being missing at other sides because a team like Cardiff has such depth in their squad that they can put two very good teams out,” he said.
“I know Cardiff pretty well from competing against them a few times, I know the manager pretty well from working with him at Watford and two or three of their players I know very well too.
“It is going to be a tough game whoever they put out but it’s important to us as a club to get through to the next round.
“That would give everybody a bit of a boost and although we can mix and match a little bit we can only ever pick our strongest team because we have a small squad.”
Cardiff manager Malky Mackay will come up against the man who gave him his break in coaching, Boothroyd, when the two were together at Watford.
It was a career development for which, Mackay says, he will forever be grateful.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing Aidy again tonight,” says Mackay. “He played a big part in my transition from player to coach and I will be forever grateful.
“Aidy gave me a chance to be part of his coaching staff and I learned so much from him.”
“He kept Northampton in the division and has changed a lot of things at the club. We are under no illusions. Northampton pose a difficult test and we have to be ready for that challenge.”
Probable line ups:
Cobblers: Snedker; Johnson, Langmead, Artell, Widdowson; Hackett, Tozer, Guttridge, Harding; Platt, Nicholls.
Cardiff: Lewis; McNaughton, Hudson, Turner, Taylor; Conway, Ralls, Whittingham, Mutch; Mason, Helguson
